the helms says to put hondabond on the 4 corners between the block and gasket. but when i took the oil gasket out, i noticed they put hondabond all around the gasket between the gasket and oil pan. (helms didn't say anything about this.) where should i put it? and how much?

 

You can put Honda bond in between the gasket and the pan. Or use tach spray (I think they call it) instead of honda bond.I use this at the shop it works like a charm. I would think with the honda bond it would take some time to clean off.

 

follow the helms... the helms is correct. ..you dont need it on the whole gasket or oilpan..

yeah, i wanna follow the helms but why would the factory put hondabond between the gasket and oilpan but not say to use it in the helms?

no need to over-do the hondabond, all you need it for is the corners, honda bond is meant to get in the corners where the gasket can not easily seal up.

 

i would follow honda but i would also put a thin line of RTV silicone gasket maker copper around the edge of the pan right next to the gasket.

that way you get a full seal. plus the gasket maker is easy to clean up once dried.

better to do it right the first time and make sure its sealed then to find out your ***** leaking and then seize your motor cuz oil started to leak.... just my opinion.

 

in my experience its best to use very little Honda Bond or none at all.....Honda Bond is mostly for where you dont have a rubber gasket

not sure what helms manual your looking at i assume the 92-95 civic one.. look at page 7-20 thats all you do. nothing more nothing else. i put the gasket on the pan, and then i put the honda bond on the gasket and just slip it up and hold it with one nut and then tighten everything down...

same goes for the valve cover also, no need for honda bond on the entire gasket just in those two area as the books shows.

 

aite, i'm gonna just put it where the book says to do it. i'm still confused why there would be hondabond between the pan and gasket though.

that's what i did when i did my turbo install and it works good.

 

i did it once at the 4 corners following helm - leaked
i did it once all around (figuring this would be a better way) - leaked
i did it the way the techs at the honda dealerships do it (no hondabond) - sealed.

no hondabond at all? how bad is the leak?

 

the first oil pan gasket, leaked in a couple of spots... seeps a little and drips.
the second oil pan gasket, leaked right by the crank pulley... front corner. and the last time, it sealed perfectly. my block is a jdm b16b unmolested when i got it and when i pulled off the oil pan, there was no hondabond at all to clean off... so i don't think honda uses hondabond on oil pans from the factory (at least not on mine)... of course i could be wrong and they were lazy when assembling my engine.

 

when u say "leak" does it leak a lot or just little drips that you can manage by? after searching and reading on here, a lot of people have trouble with these oil pan gasket. i just installed a turbo kit and i think this is the hardest thing.

 

yeah, let the seal do its job. I only use a TAD of Hondabond ONLY to hold the seal to the oil pan for assembly. Not enough to do much good or harm.

Hondabond should only be used for ghetto repair or places where there is no seal or the seal is not going to seat tight...like valve cover corners.

 

"leak" was enough for me to do it again. it wasn't really an issue if it were my beater and i could've gotten by but i didn't like it.

 

i have heard of people not using honda bond with no problems, and i BELIEVE it was our very own Ricey McRicerton. if not sorry Ricey, didn't mean to make you look like a dumbass.

 

as long as your oil pan is fine minimal to no honda bond is required. The book sais to mount on four corners to complete a seal but in most cases people apply to much making an uneven seal that cannot seal under heat- all comming from my own experience!

Nope it was me. You were correct. I got a new gasket and didn't use a single drop of Honda-Bond and it has been just fine with 0 leaking.

 

i'm gonna try it without hondabond then. thanks for the info.

 

I don't think I read it anywhere in this thread yet, but:

Do NOT overtorque things and make sure the pan is straight.

And bro - use the HondaBond, or at least some variant. The factory follows the Helms.

And are you the original owner of the vehicle? Could it be possible the oil pan was once removed by a shop?

yeah, i'm the owner of the car. for sure it's never been replaced. i gotta question though....the book says to put the 6 bolts on first. top bottom, right, left, etc...do i torque those down first or torque them all when i'm starting from the first one clockwise?
