Default Dead Speedo after hitting milk jug

Hey guys n gals. I am currently trying to get the speedo working again in my wifes 95 Prelude VTEC. As the title says she was going down I-95 and ran over a milk jug and the speedo sorta half *** worked that day and hasnt worked at all since then.

The check engine light is on, and im getting no VTEC and 6500 RPM limit.

I called the Honda Dealer and was told there is a sensor behind the right axle. I have the car up on ramps right now and cant find anything that could have been hit and dont see any kinda sensor.

I JUST got my license back from being suspended for unpaid tickets. I dont need another speeding ticket AND a faulty equip ticket.

Thanks
Daniel

I think this sensor assembly is the one you're looking for. I'm not sure on this, but maybe I'll get lucky and at least point you in the right direction until someone who knows can answer.

Also do a search in prelude archived for speed sensor. That would be your best bet for research.

There should be a vehicle speed sensor on your transaxle on the passenger side. The picture posted above is for a wheel speed sensor for the ABS.

Thats correct the one shown is the abs sensor ... isnt the speed sensor plugged into the transmission?

Believe me, I searched til 5 AM this morning looking for it. I am a member of like 7 different forums and love yelling at people to search. hehe

I found onepicture but it was zoomed in so close I couldnt tell WHERE it is. I have the ramps at my house and can take digital pictures with my wifes new camera. they will be ****** gigantic ...7.2 megapixel camera ....each picture is over 2 MB. LOL

I have a cpl friends with serious honda knowledge and will check with them also.

So if you are correct then While the car is on the ramps the VSS that controls the speedo and is setting me in Limp mode as you guys call it is on the passsenger side right by the axle connected to the tranny right?

I am off work today and have a few things to do and this is definitely one of them.

Thanks again
Daniel

Ok - shows how much I know. #8 below is the VSS/power steering sensor

quote from Hotwired - 5/1/2002 in prelude archives.
The vehicle speed sensor and power steering sensor is one unit. Its next to the rear engine mount bracket on the tranny. Look for two PS hoses.

Got it!. The dumbass Honda Tech told me it was by the axle and on the BACK of the tranny.

When my wifes father and her brother put the clutch in they didnt tighten the bolt holding it in. Thanks for your knowledge and help guys.

First off md23vtec, you know absolutely nothing about me so don't start running your mouth. This is the first time I have ever encountered this problem and the Honda Tech said it was on the back facing the firewall.....It's directly on top of the transmission and pointing straight upward. The AXLE is ON THE BOTTOM

I have owned 3 Supras and have done most of my own work on them including turbo swaps, hung my exhaust, hardpipes, bov, clutch and a few other minor mods....the only work I've taken to a pro is the body and suspension. So take a look in the mirror because you look like the dumbass for assuming you know something about someone you have never met.

On to my post.

Is the bolt labeled #14 in the schematic the one that holds it ONTO the tranny? The loose bolt we found before seemed to hold the top half together and was very short. I have the speedo working right now but I can pull it straight up from the tranny.

Thanks again for the help guys.

If in doubt-call a dealer parts department and ask them to look it up. They can also print out the diagram and partys list for free for you. Just buy the bolt from them for their effort. That is what I do when I have a special parts need.

#14 is the only thing that holds it to the transmission. The part itself can come apart, but its not supposed to.

LOL I have a manual....for the Supra. We've never had to do any repairs in the 3-4 years we've owned the car until now.....this and now the master cylinder.

UPDATE!!!
Well now Im ****** pissed. The lil piece of metal that bolt #14 goes through BROKE OFF!!! hence why the sensor is coming out. I can easily get to it with my hands and JB weld it if you guys think that will hold it ok.

Im slowly notciing lil things going wrong with the car. Clutch had to be replaced, now this , the MC, and soon the radiator. Its leaking a lil from the top....green corrosion but never needs more than a few ounces of fluid every cpl months. But its on the list now.

Just try to find the piece in the prelude classifieds. There are a couple of people parting out preludes in there. Just PM them about the specific part.

It's ten years old. you have to put a little work into it.
