So I think my speed sensor gave out on me, any ideas before I spent the $
Hey guys,
I posted on here a few days ago about a problem with my speedo going nuts but no check engine light and VTEC still working. Anyways today I started it up to go to a friends house and it was doing the same thing again, it would read my speed up to about 40km and then bounce all over the place before going back to giving me a good reading. Well on the way home a few hours later, I noticed the speedo wasn't working at all. This happened for all of 5 minutes before it started working again.
So I get on the highway and I notice VTEC sounds a bit weird. I'd hear it kick in and then it would stop for a second even though I was over the 6000 engagement and then continue to kick. Anyways I'm about 5 minutes from my house and the speedo is back at 0 but this time the check engine light is on. I checked the speed sensor connection and the wires look good, no frays or anything. So at this point should I go ahead and assume its the speed sensor and buy a new one? I was doing some research here and I heard it could be the wiring harness as well. Also my last question is can I take a speed sensor from any ek engine like a d16 and use it in my car with a b16? Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately I don't have a code reader, my brother in law does and he doesn't live too close to me. If it comes down to it I'll have to grab it from him. I just thought it was safe to assume it was the speed sensor given the situation.

Sorry to keep posting here but do d series VSS' work on B series engines? Or do I need to specifically use a B series VSS?

Searching does wonders. B and D series VSS' are identical, with the exception of the gear on them.

Before you go and buy anything check your grounds. I had a similar issue. My Speedo would not work properly and my car would be hard to start, eventually it actually stopped turning over all together.
Turns out my grounds from my battery to chassis, transmission case to chassis, and water pump to chassis where corroded, rusty and otherwise garbage. I took a grinder to both the connector and contact points and now I get better voltage at my battery, and everything works as it should.
A wire brush or sand paper could be used here as well, instead of a grinder it'll just be a git more work.

Is this case it was, thanks for all the help guys. I went to my local junkyard and pulled one out of an integra, slapped it in mine and all is well. Glad it wasn't the wiring, what a paint in the *** that would have been. Question though, the bolt that connects the sensor to the tranny, how tight does it have to be? I made it "snug" but didn't over tighten it.

i have the same problem in my 94 hatch i replaced the sensor 3 times then finally i sliced the harness and replaced the connector clip and it started working but still bounces around once and a while so ill replace the Cluster next. and mine was tighten snug as well but when i go back to school on monday ill check all data and se the exact torque spec so everyone can no it as well.
