I'm using the apexi boost soleniod with the aem ems(been using it alittle over a year). I was using the greddy profeb B spec II to control boost and I didnt like it. it was too much of a pain. I switched to the apexi boost soleniod and I'm loving every minute of it. with the aem controlling boost you have allot more options. you can controll boost by tps, vehicle speed or you can run a switch to one of the inputs and have a high/low boost settings. I decided not to use the gm boost soleniod because the ports are not threaded. If the gm boost soleniod fails, you will be at maximum boost. Its really easy to set-up. If you decided to run the apexi soleniod I can help you cofigure the tables in the aem.

How much did you pay for the Apex bc? Ive been looking for an alternative ebc solenoid that has threaded ports. The problem is they are all super expensive. Hard to compete with the $20 boost controller from GM.

Ever since I spoke to you Muckman I also have been looking for a generic solenoid with no luck.I also already have the gm but I really dont like its failure mode and thats why I am thinking of using the apexi. The an ports are very nice too.Does anyone have pics of their setup?

By failure mode Im assuming you mean how it controls boost when unpowered. Im pretty sure that is determined by how you connect it.

If safety is what your after then you want the method where 0% duty (unpowered) is min boost (bottom example).

Well I am in no way an expert on the ems and I have talked to jdogg about it a few times and he said that theres a way that the ems can compensate for it as long as your map sensor can read the higher boost level so I just went and bought the 5 bar from aem just in case but I am leaning towards getting the apexi too.I just would hate to blow my motor over a hundred dollar part but if you are correct which I do not doubt at all it still would be nice to save the hundred since I already have the gm?

i got my apexi boost soleniod for free. my friend has a avcr and he installed it wrong and blew it so he gave me everything. When the gm boost soleniod false(no power) your at maximum boost. there are allot of post on aem forum about it. there has also been other people trying to find a cheaper alternative to the apexi soleniod but no one has found one yet to my knowledge

Ive talked to all the name brand electronic boost conroller manufactures. Most of the solenoids dont have threaded ports, alot are overly expensive and some arent even sold seperately (greddy). So Ive come to the conclusion that I have to turn to a more generic industrial solenoid.

However, when I find a suitable solenoid, I will incorporate my Muckman Wastegate kit to work with the boost controller.

Thats pretty funny coming from an apexi dealer but I do agree with you as far as price goes it is a no brainer but the apexi just seems to be a much better part and gives you the option to use threaded lines.

grainger, msc, and mcmaster have all kinds of 12vdc solenoid valves that are around $15. Would those not work?

One that might work is the 320 series from Humphrey. it is a 12vdc 3 way valve but by plugging one or more holes, can function in a few different modes.

My innovative MSBC-1 came with 2 of humphrey's valves.

The lable reads

310
12v dc
4.5watts
0-125 P.S.I.

i'm using the GM boost soleniod with my ems. Just hooked it up last week. One wire to 12volts. Other wire gets grounded by the EMS...
Works great... Dont forget to turn on "Boost W/G Feedback". It allows the ems to adjust soleniod dutycycle as necessary.
If you go into "advanced boost", then "boost target methods", then "VSS dependent", it allows you to have your boost controlled by Vehicle speed... I love it, it works great. Due to street traction issues, i set mine up for 10psi in 1st gear, 12psi in 2nd gear, and 15psi from 3rd gear up.
Just like anything else with tuning, you will need to datalog "boost control parameters" and drive it... and make changes...
Good luck.
