Default Bad Rings, Blown valve guides? which one is it..

Im actually posting this out of my friends concern.

I just recently installed a JDM Itr motor in an 1992 Hatch

The motor runs very strong, except he's getting some oil smoke (bluish grey) at higher rpms. I knoticed it more when he would go "down hill" that in the higher R's, the motor starts to smoke.

My question is,

What do these syptoms sound like to you?

Also, I know without seeing the car or motor, its hard to tell, but is there any tests or something I can do to check exactly why the motor is smokin?

Other then that, he is a happy camper and the car pulls very strong.
Not to mention that the motor has about 75k miles on it.

At idle and regular driving, there is absolutely NO smoke

Thanks for any help you can provide

does it smoke at WOT? or mainly when letting off the gas or coasting...

...IIRC, smoking while coasting or off the gas, but not while on the gas, is a sign of bad valve seals. I forget the exact explanation, someone correct me if im wrong.

edit: i suck at reading.

When he is normally driving, no smoke at all comes out.

Hope this helps

Also in the cabin of the car, it smells like oil when going WOT

Sounds almost exactly like my B18C. It smokes going down this hill near my house, only after I stopped at the bottom and take off again. Also, it smokes after WOT when I slow down. My motor is very strong. I was told it could be my rings.

Oh, and when I come to a stop at a light, I see smoke blow towards the front of the car. When I take off, there's a small cloud.

eek sounds like worn rings to me. take the car to a shop and ask for a cylinder leakage test. this will tell you if you have any serious internal problems like bent valves, worn rings etc. If i remember correctally you shouldn't have more then like 5-10% leakage on any cylinder. At first it sounded like you were running really rich and washing your cylinder walls but it sounds more like worn rings now

Do a leakdown test...if you dont have the tools do a compression test...this will tell you a whole lot more rather than guessing....for your sake I hope its bad valve stem seals....good luck....

RTW Ryan,

Correct, smoking on start-up or decel is a sign of loose guides and or bad valve seals.
