I have been having some misfire issues with my 2000 R. Done just about every small thing that I could think of to get it fixed, now its time to start tearing into the head.
Did a compression test today:
CYL #1: 176
CYL#2: 50
CYL#3: 120
CYL#4: 170
Do you think that I have messed up valves? Or is there something wrong with the headgasket?
Either way, the head is coming off, and everything will be replaced as nessesery.
Let me know what you think is wrong

notice how 2 cyls next to each other are low? this usually means a blown head gasket but it could very very well be other things. Best bet, take off the head and find out

That would be great if it was just the headgasket. I am hoping to hear that from others as well.
if its a head gasket, you can sometimes find oil in the coolant. check your rad cap and see if any oil is floating around in there. Also, if your coolant is low, you could be losing it by head gasket as well, but you would probably be smoking white out of the exhaust. also try a leakdown test.

There is something leaking down the back of the engine. Its definatly not oil. But it looks thicker that water.
I have a feeling that the headgasket is done. I will check the water when the car cools down, thanks for the tip

When oil mixes with coolant you get a nasty, frothy white mess.
Do a leakdown test also - that will give you an idea how far you need to go with the motor.

So I would get a ton of water in the oil? My H2O seems fine, hmmmm???

If you have a headgasket problem, you'll probably see the frothy mess on the underside of the radiator cap and oil cap - pull the cam cover and look for it also.
Just helped pull the motor out of a friend's bmw today that had a cracked block - head looked like this:

Finally did a compression test, it would of been nice if it were only the headgasket. Good Luck

burnt valve if i had to put my money on it. did someone improperly adjust the valve clearance at any time?
do a leakdown and let's see the leakage numbers. also see where the leakage is coming from.

valves seem to have been adjusted properly.
Leakdown is next on the list, hopefully soon.
thanks everyone for the help
