Default how is important is the gasket between the turbo and the downpipe?

well, i bought a greddy 18g manifold, turbo, downpipe from a guy on ebay. well it turns out that he doesnt have the gasket that goes in between the turbo and the downpipe elbow, and the downpipe elbow and the downpipe itself. and aparently that is a special piece and i tried calling greddy and all and i've just been getting the run around. so my question is how important are those gaskets? can i just use come copper gasket spray from like advanced auto parts instead of getting a gasket? or is a gasket needed? could i get a dremel and use a wirebrush and polish off the surfaces and then spray on the copper gasket spray. would that seal it enought and not leak?

you can use some hi-temp rtv, but its honestly not that big of a deal. as long as its after the turbo who cares.

don't bother with a gasket or RTV, I've had my dp off so many times at this point, no gasket and no leaks...

cut one out of tin can, can multi layer it if your flanges are a bit out of straightness

And they only take like 15 min each to cut with a sharp exactoknife

carbon buildup makes an excellent seal very quickly (if the surfaces are flat of course)

i don't run a gasket on my downpipe or my wastegate & no leaks from either. the wastegate used to blow gaskets out like crazy. no gasket, no problem.

Yah man, you don't really need a gasket there. If it's nice and flat it should seal quite well. I've never used one there on any of my past or current setup. Just make sure your bolts are tight!

yeah, i'll make sure their tight, should i use that copper spray like i was talking about? also should i use like a wire brush and clean the surfaces, because they have some rust on them, the parts are used, and i think they sat a little while.

None of you guys use copper spray for this? just make sure it's clean and flat before installing the DP to the turbine? I needed to know too.
