Automatic tranny slipping 1990 DX auto sedan
Hi, I searched and came up with nothing related to auto trannies. (well one thread that's relevant). So here is the question... when it's really really cold my tranny slips like mad. Now, I know this isn't a huge concern for me, but it's just a winter car for me that I'm gonna give to my mom to use in the spring. So before she takes it I want to fix all the problems. This is what it does:
when turning I slow down, then when I go to acc out of the turn, it revs like mad but barely moves, so I let the accel go and it catches up.
sometimes at cruize speed (constant accel pressure) the car starts to buck slowly. it's NOT an engine misfire, def tranny related.
accel 1st/2nd gear the tranny slips quite a bit. I just take it easy and she goes.
thing is, before my mom takes the car, I wanna fix it cuz I think it would be dangerous for her to drive a car that sometimes doesn't behave as expected. I have a spare engine and tranny out of the same car, but I'm worried that maybe the other tranny is the same or even worse?? does anyone know WHICH parts I should inspect? I have access to Helms of course, so replacement is not a concern... rather just what PARTS do you recommend I replace when 'rebuilding' the tranny.
thanks

You really want to open up an auto tranny??? Trannies are pretty complexe...
What does the fluid look like? Have you changed it to see if that would help.
It may be a problem with the oil pump, pressure regulator, atf strainer, or simply a multitude of components becuase the tranny is shot.
I am an auto tech and if after the oil change, it is still doing it, i would either bring it to a specialised tranny shop, or junk it.

Take it to honda or any other shop and have them flush / re-fill the atf fluid. I did that on mine around 60k. It was like a new tranny afterwards...
well I was at the dealer and wanted to get a new filter for it, and he said the filter is internal and I'd have to drop the tranny to do it... and it was already cold out so I said fuggit! yes the fluid was changed... 1. I change ALL my fluids belts hoses wires spark plugs cap and rotor on every used car I get and 2. I replace the axle, so the fluid had to be drained anyways.
you never know the service history of these things
so yeah... it still slips when it's cold... and not to be cocky, but to me, everything on a car is just a mechanical or electrical assembly. if they can put it together, I can take it apart and put it together. I've rebuilt Hitachi carbs and those are pretty intricate too. so tranny work doesn't scare me... plus I got a spare one so if I goof up I can just put the other one in
hahaha well, I'll keep your suggestions in mind when I do it. thanks a lot for your help!!

Automatic transmissions have clutch packs much
like something you would find in a motorcycle..
Slipping usually indicates that the unit is low on fluid
or that the clutches are worn out..

If your local dealer doesn't have them you could always order them from majestic honda. They list the clutch packs for the at trans on their site. I think the whole assembly is 260 dollars.
