Default TPS question

Ok I have a 98 Civic EX (d16y8 SOHC VTEC) and I had to replace my TPS sensor. When I replaced it, I didnt know where to position it and just positioned it in the middle. What things would happen to my car if its not positioned right? Because theres black smoke comin out of my exhuast and its spittin out these black stuff eveytime I rev it. Smells like its runnin too rich also. I did a little research and found that it could be my o2 sensor also. But Im not gettin any CEL codes. I should be gettin a CEL code if the o2 is bad right? Last question, how would I know if I positioned the TPS right? Thanks in advance people.

YOu can test it with a multimeter and backprobes, or with an OBD1/2 scanner, even a SAFC/VAFC

You need to find out what your voltage is reading at idle....should be close to .5 volts

so i need to start my car while checking the voltage or could i just turn my key to the on position and then check it?

tps sensor voltage should be at .5 closed throttle amd 4.5 WOT, you don't have to have the car running just turn the key to the on position.... good luck

I love it when people try to reinforce the 4.5v WOT

All that matters is the low end, WOT will work itself out via the ecu

Tell me, what do you to if you get .75 volts at idle, when getting 4.5v at WOT, and you get 3.25v WOT at .5v idle?? Is there another way to miracuously adjust the tps sensor?

True, I dont think you can change the WOT voltage not unless you hook up a relay, switch, or a device to make it 4.5v at WOT. I think Ill be able to build a circuit to fix that. But I dont think I have that much time to build it. Alright, Im gonna fix it as soon as I have the time. Thanks.

You use both. If you are getting 3.25v at WOT, they is something wrong with your TPS, wiring, or the supplied voltage.

Why doesn't it work??? Last time I checked voltage on my TPS..I did not get 4.5v at WOT, however did get the voltage I needed at idle. Interesting...yet it certainly revved to redline..and at the same speed as before.

Now...if my TPS was bad as you say, and I was getting say 4.25 v at WOT, then what is the recourse??? Would my car not redline? Would my car stop at say, 6200 RPM???

.5 and 4.5 is a "range" you should set it at. Setting one and not the other, you should be overlooking a problem with the TPS, wiring, or the supplied voltage. Just because it is getting the .5v or less for idle, does not mean it is getting ~4.5 v at WOT.

The TPS works (or tells the ECU) mainly idle and heavy changes in throttle position (WOT, heavy throttle load). If the TPS is at lower voltage (talking less then ~4v) the ecu will think the motor is at a less load than it is, and will not tip-in the right fuel for it. The TPS makes instant changes where the MAP can not see the changes as fast. It has nothing to do with redline/rev limited.


One more thing, I can not believe the ego you have. Try to loose up, nobody is right all the time and.or knows everything.
