MSD Power Extreme Cap (for external coil mod)
has anyone here ever installed the new MSD distributor cap that enables the use of an externl coil? If so, was the installation/wiring hard to do?
I have an MSD 6A and Blaster 2 coil sitting in the garage, and was thinking of getting this setup.
thanks!

I JUST put an MSD SCI on my Sol cause my ignighter or coil (never figured out which) went bad. A buddy of mine said he would sell me his SCI and his Blaster 3 coil for cheaper than i could buy an ignighter, so I figured "Why the hell not?"
It wasn't tough at all really! Just follow the directions that come with the cap and it will tell you how to connect the red and the white wire from your MSD box to where those two wires went to the oem coil. (at least its red and white for the SCI) If you or a friend of yours can solder, have them solder those wires to where they go to under the cap. You might have to drill a small hole for the wires to get out of the cap and to the SCI. I ran the wires for my box from the engine compartment, under the center consol, and into the rear drivers side glove compartment so I wouldn't have to worry about it getting hot. Looks real clean! No wires, no nothing! Just make sure you use 10 gauge wire for the power and ground to the box so it can get plenty of juice with minimal resistance! (When the top is on and the radio is off I can hear the box making noise, so if thats gonna bother you, you might wanna put it somewhere else.)
BTW did you buy the MSD wires? If not you need to take the old-style boots off you OEM plug wires and put on the ones that came with your MSD cap. DON"T CUT THE OEM WIRES!! THEY WON"T BE LONG ENOUGH!! Instead cut off the old-style boots with a razor blade and remove the old metal clips and replace with the ones that came with the cap. They will work just fine. I've been running like this for about 3 weeks with no problems! Take you time and do a good job.
Good luck!

The new line of Extreme caps aren't available yet. My warehouse has had them on order since August '04 and MSD still hasn't delivered them yet.
You can get their regular power caps though.
MSD hookup isn't hard at all.

thanks for the replies! Appreciate the info.. I think this is something that I'll definately be doing (heck, the MSD box and coil are just sitting around).
The parts store across from my work has the extreme cap.. I think it's P/N: 8292... guess I'll have to purchase their wires as well. Now, I've got a 95 Del Sol Si... will I be able to use those spark plug wires on a B16A, if I ever do a swap in the future? I know that they have different part #s on plug wires for the D16 vs the B16... is it just length? or are they completely incompatible?

I installed a MSD SCI, Blaster 2 coil, and a regular cap a couple of years ago. Didn't know a whole lot about wiring. Follow the directions and you shouldn't have a problem.
yeah everything is pretty self explainatory, just take your time and double check everything and you will be fine shouldnt have any problems with it.
the D series plug wire won't have a problem clicking onto the spark plugs, but the circular rubber top part of the plug wire won't seat all that well on the top of the valve cover. I test fitted on a B18b valve cover and it will 'work' but the rubber top wont seat perfectly. You can use the stock D series plug wires if you carfully cut off the old boots at the dist. cap with a razor blade and replace them with the ones that came with the cap. You will have to replace the metal clips inside the boots too. (They came with the cap too)
