'91 Si 2.1 Revving Issue
I was referred to this forum from another more general one, hoping the regulars here would be more knowledgable about hondas. Here's my problem... when in neutral(true or clutched), my car revs. On an initial start, it will rev from about 2k-3k. As it climbs to running temperature, the rev range drops from 1k to 1.5k. I have been told by some they suspect a clogged throttle body, but I from what knowledge I have, I doubt it due to the rev's variability(is that a word?) and another revelation. When I take lead off the Manifold Air Pressure sensor(i think thats the one, on the back of the throttle body), it will idle at 3k when cold, 2k when hot, along with showing check engine. This revving problem is very irritating because when setting at an intersection, it seems like I'm trying to initiate a race with everyone, along with the extra gas consumption that comes along with it. I have replaced the Coolant Temperature sensor already. Next, I plan to replace the Intake Air temp sensor unless someone has a better solution. Any help you could give me would be much appreciated.

welcome to honda-tech... i have a 1990 honda prelude and mine revs at about 2000 when cold and about 1000 when warm. i have found out though that when i have a few accessories running like a/c, heater, cd player, lights...etc. i have found that the rev will bounce from 1500 to 1000, i dont think it is your throttle body either... more like an electrical problem...
hope this helps, if not bump
hehe the thing oyu are referring too behind the manifold is the map sensor m(anifold absolute pressure) hehe
yes sometimes with irregular idleing it could be an electrical problem in the map sensor... try resetting your ecu first (remove clock/radio fuse)... then you can go as far as measuring the voltage
another problem could be your eacv (electric air control valve) circuit... resetting the ecu can work for this too and if not you can measure voltage as well... try the simple reset first hehe let us know if nething changes

You describe the exact same thing that is happening to my prelude. '88 2.0 S, I was told it COULD be vacuum leak, carbuerator needs to be adjusted, choke is stuck, general tune up. I have yet to solve this freaking annoying problem.
when I start it up cold it revs up to around 2k when it suppose to stick at 1.5k. Once my temp gauge warms up to normal operating level my revs drop down to 1.5k and sticks there for what seems like forever. My revs drop much slower then before ex. driving normally I hit the speed i want to be at and hit the clutch and drop into neutral. My revs drop slowly down to 1.5k, as if my foot was slowly letting off the gas. Usaully it drops like a rock down to .5k rpm. I'v even noticed atleast once during the drive the revs would pop up to 2.5k - 3k and stay there for ~30 seconds. The only way I could bring the revs would be to stick it in high and gear and physicaly hold back the engine.
I will be doing a tune up soon so we'll see... any ideas and help would be much appreciated. Its a total drag driving the car now, no more fun
