Default B17A? worth it?

I have just purchased a 92 honda civic si hatch. I need a motor swap. The b18c1 is a little to pricy. But I have seen the b17a swap in the 2000-2400 range. But I do not know much about this motor. I have searched and searched. Is this engine known for having problems? Good idea or bad? I mean it is only a bit more costly than the b16a2 swap. HELP guys. What are some pros and cons. Im goin for 200-220 whp n/a.

In terms of a full swap you would be better off and the cost would probably be lower to go with an OBD1 B16A second gen swap. The B17A1 from the 92-93 Integra is OBD1 but it uses a cable tranny. In order to use it as a full swap you would need a hydro to cable conversion kit, that or get a hydro B series tranny. As for performance, the second gen B16A and the B17A1 are pretty much identical.

Stock, the B17A has the same power output as the B16A - 160HP. But it does have more torque due to its displacement. Low compression (9.7:1 vs 10.2:1 for a B16A) probably plays a large role in keeping its power output down somewhat (compared to what it could be, that is). But if you are shooting for 200WHP, you are going to increase compression anyway. So this is not a problem. And the extra 100cc displacement will definitely come in handy here.

As for the cable transmission, you cannot easily or cheaply use this in a 1992 Civic. But keep in mind that this YS1 transmission is actually highly sought after and can easily be sold. So don't let this stop you. All in all, a B17A swap for only a little more than a 2G B16A swap is a good idea.

well...I think I will go with the b17a. everyone has a b16. I want to be different and feel like the car will stand out from the rest. But now where to find the swap? Im to scared to buy from one of these personal adds. to much of a risk! HMO has them but thats the only place i have found. Do you know anywhere or have any ideas of a company that could help me? thanx

From the posts I've seen over the years HMO is the place to go.They may not be the cheapest when compared to some of the independent importers. But they will come with everything they say.

The B17a is a very good choice. If I'm not mistaken the VTEC off of that motor is second best right under the ITR head. If you want to, you can always trade the cable tranny and opt for other VTEC trannys'.

The vtec? What are you taliking about? If its the head your refering too, its a PR3, which is identical to the B16 in every way. The B17 is a north American b series only, with the only engiine differences being the crank rods and pistons. The B17 even uses a B16 block, it just uses a stroker crank for the extra cc's.

The type R (18c5) also has a pr3 head, but is slighly hand ported at Honda, uses better cams, valves, and vale springs.

I'm not sure if it's worth the price because that depends on your budget. Is a k20 worth the price, hell yes if you can afford it. I have personally owned 2 b17's and a b18c. All of my friends have had b16's. The b17 is superior to the b16. It shares the same hp with more tq with less compression; a half point less. B17 9.7:1 B16 10.2 So, even if you never did any internal mods, you will be ahead of a b16. From personal experience, I would suggest the B17, but only if the price is reasonable. Good luck and have fun.
