Default Faulty ECU? Bad Burn? HELP ASAP

I have a p28 with a mugen chip and sometimes I occasionally throw a CEL out of nowhere and my car will sputter to death. Having absolutely no idea what it was because the CEL wouldln't throw a code, I decided to pull out the carpet and check for bad grounds or bad wires. NOTHING.. Then, just messing around, I made the CEL go off by tapping the ECU against the car, sorta like what would happen if you hit a bump. I tried it again, same result. So does this sound like my ECU is bad? Or maybe it's just the chip? Help Please!

I've seen this happen before and it caused the exact same problem. You may need to solder the chip in as opposed to just having it pressed into a socket.

Check the solder connections on the socket itself.. if someone did a bad job putting it in then that could be the source of the problem... or have an electronics tech do it... whichever... and is the ECU bolted down or just sitting around in your floorboard? I'd bolt it down to keep the electronics from jarring around
