I know it says it in the owner's manual. Besides why would you want to use anything less in that beast?

 

what about the civic ex (z6)? its only 87/89 isn't it?

Regular is fine for the D series.

 

Run whatever doesn't detonate early. I know the 91/93 is recommended for the DOHC VTEC engines, but I know some guys who run 89 in them just fine.

 

hmm.. I dont know, in Taiwan the D motor recommend to use 95..
When I was with a B (before it blown) I need to fed her up with 98, i guess it have something to do with the "JDM' thingy

the US probably uses a different octane scale than taiwan. outside the US, they use RON. in the US, we use CLS ([MON + RON] / 2). i'm not sure of the scale differences exactly, but 91 RON = 87 CLS

 

When I've only got a few bucks in my pocket sometimes I use regular gas, runs fine for me.

 

you should be fine with 89 octane gas, you shouldnt get any pinging or anything,if you were boosted or had really high compression pistons i would go for 93+ if i could

I dont think you understand how octane works.

use 91 at least once a month...lol...thats good.

higher octane isnt better, the only thing that is different between 89 and 93 gas is the 93 octane gas is harder to ignite, thats why turbo/nitrous motors need high octane gas to prevent detonation

 

it will run with mid grade or regular but with those octane the knock sensor will retard the timing to prevent knock

what is the best? a higher octane graded fuel doesn't mean it's a better fuel.


the number found on each grade of fuel is not the fuels quality rating, nor is it a power rating. this number is the average number derived from two tests(MOM & ROM) to determine the fuels ability to resist detonation. you will not gain additional power by simply dropping a higher octane fuel than recommended into you tank. 87 octane has a lower flash point than 91. when you use 91, or 93 when your cars motor will run @ 100% on 87 or 89, will result in lower fuel economy, and lower peak performance. the higher octane fuel will not be completely combusted, and will add to higher emissions, and lead to the build up of carbon deposits just to name of few. Not to mention cost more money at the pump.

as per the federal government, and the California air resource board all fuel has to have a minimum amount of detergent additive in the fuel. some companies have a better additive than others, and some even have a higher amount of this detergent in their fuels. each company has the same amount of detergent from grade to grade. for example chevron 87 has the same amount of detergent as chevron 89, 91, or 93. Texaco's 87 has the same amount of detergent as Texaco's 89, 91, and 93, and so on.

now when it comes to the off brand gas station (Joe's food and fuel) is where this is different. these stations may not offer a brand name fuel, but they are still buying fuel from a name brand refinery. this is known as unbranded fuel. the station wants to offer the best possible price so this station buys fuel from whoever is cheapest that day. lets say BP 87 is the cheapest that day. they are buying the BP fuel, but what they are getting in the fuel is, BP's "generic" fuel additive. this additive is the bare minimum of what what the federal government requires, and this is reflected in the price. but the 89, 91, and 93 at this same station may be from 3 different vendors, and will contain different levels and varieties of detergent additive.

My bottom line: Pick your favorite brand of fuel, and run the lowest grade possible that won't cause detonation.

My pick for all grades below 91: Chevron
My pick for grades 91 and up: Amoco Ultimate Clear with a bottle of Chevron Techron added.

That is at best an imperfect guess. VTEC del sol's have knock sensors, a change in the weather is all that is required for detonation despite the fact that it was running fine 2 days ago.

If your timing gets retarded, chances are you're losing power and subsequently mpg will drop. It's a stupid idea when your engine is built for high octane. I spend the extra 80 cents and use the highest I can find (93). My vtec sol gets 33mpg, can't complain.

Best rule of thumb is to use the octane listed in your owners manual. Never lower, higher is fine but may not be needed.

My D16Y8 (9.6:1) runs fine on the lowest octane avail and it too has a knock sensor. In fact on my last tank of gas I got 35.7MPG. I have tried higher octane and found no improvement whatsoever.

Helms shows fuel requirements for D16Y5, D16y7, D16Y8 as 86 Octane or higher

B16A2 91 Octane or higher

 

I run 93, just to be safe.

thats right on. something that people aren't taking into consideration is that even though the compression ratio of B16A and B18C1 is relatively low, 10.4 or lower, the spark and fuel tables are more aggressive than similarly sized engines with similar compression ratio.
