Default Thinking of Hondata for the R. What am I looking at?

I have an appointment on Friday to get the car dyno tuned with the VAFC - but I am starting to think of picking up a Hondata system (the place I am going is a Hondata dealer and tuner). Looking at the Hondata site I see the base S200 with datalogging is $295, but I know there are several 'add-ons' as well as the need for an ODBII > ODBI harness adapter and a new ODBI ECU.

I know with all the little bits required a Hondata system can get very expensive. Two questions:
1. How much $ am I looking at for the S200 with what I need, the install and a tune out the door?
2. Is that price worth it over the VAFC?

I bought a used basic S200 unit and P72 Hondata ready ecu for a little over $300. A great deal! If you look around you'll find good stuff for good prices.

The VAFC was nice but I sold it after I bought the VAFC because there was no need for it and the Hondata can be even more fine tuned.

What have you done to your car so far? Mods? I believe Trey reached 190whp with bolt-ons, stock cams, adjustable cam gears, etc and Hondata. Someone can add or correct me on this.

I say go for Hondata. You can add other things like data logging, launch control and so on at later dates if needed.

Good luck!

Yes, but I know this Hondata dealer/tuner and I know of no PowerFC tuners in the area (I haven't looked that hard though).

Until you make any changes in your current setup. Then you have to pay to get it retuned....not very friendly to people who aren't done modifying their car and don't feel like paying $100+ in tuning everytime they make a change

I think the Hondata is a great set-up. When it comes time that's the route I will go. I was quoted about $700CAD for the s200, harness, OBD1 ECU and install. Tuning on the dyno was $150CAD per hour and 3-4 hours suggested(but 1-2 would do it). Street tuning is $60CAD per hour and a couple hours is good. That was ballpark figures back in Sept. when I wanted to get it but plans changed and now I will have to wait until Spring. Hope this helps

Definately a good setup to run. Don't mean to solicit, but I have everything you will need for sale. Figure if you are looking for a setup and a discount, might help. Good luck with whatever you choose though!

Talk to WiredSpeed. They have some awesome S200 pricing.. You might wanna consider a few addons, so that you may do some adjustments yourself.. tuning your setup isnt really difficult with a Hondata S200.

I just spoke with the local hondata dealer/tuner... He told me that honestly, at this alltitude (Denver), I probably would not see gains over the VAFC that would make the expense worth it...

hmm.. never heard of that being an issue before.. did he happen to say why?

I bought my Hondata from Wiredspeed.. pretty good pricing.. expect to spend 300-500 to get the s200 setup with everything you'd need..

with your mods hondata is perfect for your car. You could probably find a used one for not too much money maybe $600? but you are going to need tuning wiht thoughs cams and thats not cheap. usually a good tune costs $400-$600.

Are you in Canada? If so, where did you acquire those tuning rates? (i.e - what shop)
