Default dilemma:swap pistons or build head

im picking up a cherry GSR shorblock, and according my #'s if i do a 2 layer headgasket, millt eh head 10-15tho and do flatfaced valves i can get into the 11's in compression. should i do all that or swap the pistons out to JDM R, and 2 layer+valves?

BTW my only reservation for keeping the bottom end the way it is, is that its a 01 with only 36k on it- still new!

thats not even a good question, high compression will get you nothing if you cant take advantage of it......headwork for sure

voted headwork...people are making some crazy power on stock blocks. honda's design is all in the head...unless u want full out race motor i wouldn't swap internals in the block just yet.

SORRY i didnt make this more clear, the question is more suited to where to get the compression from, the stock GSR is 10:1 from the factory, with my b16 head on it the compression willbe ~9.8:1!
i am not doing headwork like porting but i will be doing headwork as in milling and valves to get the compression i want. buti im not sure if the flat tops are the way to go or the light dome of the jdm itr

i think you should do the head-work first.

if your gonna mill hte head might as well port the head as well...i would suggest going only 15 over and welding the chambers on the head so it will have the characteristics as a gsr in the port...while your at it swap in itr intake valves...relatively cheap and has a better flow angle once the head is ported and milled...with stock bottum end and the mill you should be able to get 10.4-10.6 compression...try removing a layer from your stock head gasket as well...

itr pistons dont cost much, Block isnt in the car yet. and if you do the work your self why not?
Im not saying dont do the headwork, pretty easy to take the head off later.
