Maximum safe boost on a stock D16Y8 tuned with Hondata
I know this is probably the most common question asked in this forum, but my search failed to reveal any concrete answers about my specific situation... plus I'm kind of a n00b when it comes to boost. I'm just looking for a roundabout figure to get an idea. I have a 97 D16Y8, bone stock, 100K. I'll be boosting on pump gas with a greddy 15g kit, 31" Coach intercooler, DSM 450's, Hondata s200b and controlled by an Apexi AVC-R. The Y8 that the kit came off of lasted approx. 5 years on 10psi. I'm going to be having it professionally tuned right after the installation. I'm just looking for a roundabout figure. Thanks Guys!
9psi ... at 10 the risk is jumping significantly, at least that's my estimate of what everybody says running at 10 - mostly coolant problems, assosiated with the headgasket occur
many people have made alot of power with a stock motor.
dont worry about the psi figure. you want to look at the power figure. the motor blows because of to much power, not to much boost.
i would say your fine till around 200, then you going to need some forged pistons and stuff.
tunning is the key, get it done right, and you will have no problems.
platinum.

yeah, I should say it with HP instead of psi ... so my guess is that about 185WHP is a good number for a stock D-motor ... at 200WHP the risk to have problems is jumping a lot more
the 10-11psi limit on a stock D is only if you're running based off the stock map sensor which hits it's voltage ceiling at ~10.5psi.
consensus on hp ceiling on a stock D is approximately 230-250hp with a very good tune. The rods become the weak link at this point if the tune is good enough not to detonate and take out a piston.

Thanks for all the responses. I should have indicated in the initial post that my power goals were actually between 180-200whp. I'm not sure I'll even be able to squeze that much out of it, because I'll be using the stock exhaust piping with an apexi n1 axel-back for now.
I'm not sure what to really expect... my only advantage is the s200b... now I have to find a local tuner shop that can tune Hondata. I'll probably have to drive to Toronto...
Do people ever make decent numbers on stock piping?

DO NOT RUN A STOCK EXHAUST WHEN BOOSTING. Its like trying to drink a 64oz cup of pop with a gay coffee straw, you just dont do it. My friend did it for a while. He was running 6psi (whatever the stock internal WG setting was at) stock exh. for a while. Had 2.5in piping installed all the way back and boost went to 11psi. He turned it down tho. Get a good exh. setup, you wont regret it.

For now, I just don't have a choice. Maybe things will change in the next month or so, I plan to install in april when it's warmer. I can get one of those cheap generic ebay 2.5" mandrel cat-backs for ~$140 plus 100 for shipping, then when ******* canada customs clears it, another $200 COD. I wish I lived in the US.
