Emergency brake light stays on when cold
I have a 97 Type R (#198) with about 53,500 miles on it. For the last several winters, when it's under 35 degrees F outside, the emergency brake light doesn't shut off until I've driven for 10 or 15 minutes... then the light comes back on under braking for about 5 minutes, then it's off for good.
I've taken it to the dealer several times for this, they tell me a switch is stuck, they clean it, and the problem goes away for a week or so.
Any suggestions on what else I should be checking?

Get a new cap for the brake fluid Res, simple.

I don't think so... they made it sound like all they did was clean the switch that turns the idiot light on.

I'll check that. Thanks.

I've had this happen on a few cold mornings this winter. My ITR is a 2000 with 36k miles. Same symptom: BRAKE light stays illuminated for about 10-15 minutes. I found that when applying the brakes, the light would go out, then when I got off the brakes it would come back on.
Brake fluid level was fine. Brake feel and performance was normal. I was just watching for the issue, maybe happened three occasions, and hasn't for about two months now. I didn't take it in to the dealer since I attributed it to freezing temps.

As was eluded to, the e-brake and brake fluid reservoir switch share the same idiot light on the dash. So-- check that out
When I am "Actually" low on brake fluid, it comes on when accelerating. I'll tap my e-brake to check, but that is a mechanical switch on the e-brake handle, not really with the activation of rear pads.

It's probably the "reed switch" that is frozen. When the float with magnet in the brake fluid reservoir goes down it will close the contacts in the reed switch. Maybe that switch is frozen and closed when it's cold.
Thanks for all of the tips. My guess is that the switch in the reservoir is the one that's giving me the trouble. I wonder if that's the switch that the dealer looked at. Thanks to everybody for all of the suggestions.
