Nah... there's thin metal shims epoxy'd to the back of some hawk pads, and they will come off - i've seen it happen before. Resolution? Throw 'em out..... really dont need 'em.

hey man, the metal shim came off on my Hawk pads too.
somehow it got crunched up and started to rub against the rotor, not the brake disc itself but the rotor part where the back of the wheel would be flush with the rotor surface. and I didn't noticed this till like much much later and it made a groove in the rotor.
I was always doubtful against american products (no offence) but this very first american product that I put on my car let me down so I'm going back to Endless pads next time and japanese products for that matter....

Same happened to me and it ground grooves in the "hat" of the front rotors so deep that the rotors were garbage. I talked to a Jerry DeMarino at Hawk who promised to call me back in a day or 2. That was before Christmas... Maybe I'll call him again on Monday... I sent them a copy of the bill for a new pair of rotors (after I mailed one of the old ones to them at an additional $20)
I seem to have been lost in the shuffle.
I've just emailed Mr DeMarino with my complaint once again. Perhaps Hawk will help us out. I know that 3 of the racecars I crew for use Hawk pads so I thought I'd be getting the best in going with Hawk...
I'll keep you guys posted regarding whether or not Hawk stands behind their product...

YES!!!!!! that's the word I was looking for ......"hat" of the rotor!!!!! thank you!!!!
holy it's that bad???? my groove is about 1mm i'm guessing......but still......i get paranoid and stuff. Go with Endless next time, they dont' have the metal shim backing and they're good stuff. At least going with Endless, you'll know it won't damage your rotors by engraving a groove into it.

Guys, I think if all of us complain to Hawk, we can get something out of this.
Possibly even class action law suit. They have to be aware of the problem; but yet they give no warning of this in the product description. Nothing comes in the box warning of this.

yeah law suit is not really needed, complaining and possibly getting money back would be a good idea. Just our amount of word about their product will make them lose a small amount of business already. Onyx00, let me know how it works out cause i want a refund too and go with a different pad.

That's cuz they don't put shims on blues.

I removed the shims, you're right it isn't hard.
BUT THAT DOESN'T CHANGE THE FACT THAT THE MORONS AT HAWK SHOULD MENTION THIS!!! Why even put a shim on the pads if you are supposed ot take them off? Anyone?
Oh, and it's not like I never posted about installing pads on this board... https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=111962
One person suggested taking the shims off, that was it.
My point is that you all seem so "Yeah, just take the shim off, duh" but no one really was that vocal about it when I originally posted about it!

The OEM Honda anti-squeal shims were left with the factory Honda pads.
