Default driving in the snow...

hey guys, today's the first time i took my car out in a blizzard.. wasn't too bad, only about an inch of slush on the highway... (no i don't got snow tires and yes it was a dumb idea)... i noticed the car doesn't go unless it has traction, i can rev it as high as I want and tires will spin only when there is traction with the ground, as compared to driving in the rain, often i get wheel hopping if I revved a little hard... can anyone explain to me why?

TIA

when I stepped on it hard, the tires won't spin if it doesn't grab, and car don't move forward... it revvs as if it's in neutral until it has traction..

i noticed this because when I had my automatic Galant, when I accelerate in the snow, the front of the car will sway left and right if it had no traction.

err the tires are spining on top of the snow if they are not straight or the snow under your tires becomes inclined left or right you will slide the opposite direction you will regain traction when your tires have melted or moved all the snow underthem or you take you heavy foot off that gas. want my opion on drving in the snow? look at my sig

Snow is not bad...unless you have to dig your car out. The trick to it is when a skid is enduced, let go of everthing and steer slow and your car will regain traction. Plus, doing doughnuts in a parking lot is always fun.

the open differential in the Accord hinders any possibility of driving safely in the snow IMHO... to demonstrate, try this: put the right drive wheel on ice, and the left drive wheel on pavement. attempt to accelerate... you'll notice that your right wheel will spin, but your left wheel won't move at all. open differentials drive power to the path of least resistance...

now that i have an LSD, my car can actually be driven in the snow since a limited-slip diff. drives power to the wheel with the most grip (in essence)...

the snow is fun, especially when you're goin' about 105 mph and sitting still!
then playing in empty parking lots and sliding the car a good 250-300 feet.
but if you hit something, well that sucks.

Doing that isn't going to do your differential any good, dude.

I just got my first set of all-season tires in 8 years – Dunlop SP Sport 5000s. I've been running summer treads in past winters (RE-71, AVS Intermediate, AVS Sport).
These Dunlops have phenomenal snow traction. I was out there in climbing hills in 6 inches of snow giggling like a little girl...

this is not a flame, but that is even more stupid than doing it in a Accord
higher center gravity means quicker snap spins
