What type of metal and what gauge do most people user for cages?
Also. . .are there any pre-fabbed cages out there that you just have to have welded in. . . maybe in 2/3 pieces or something like that?

I also have a question with regards to roll cages.
What bender do people recommend to use? Also what material thickness/diameter and the type of metal to use? Do people use Tubing or Pipe?
thanks very much...

they have just about everything you will need for a cage. i dont have any experience with them or in building a cage. i was looking at building a cage and it looked like it would be cheaper to just buy the cage pre-bent from them than to make your own bends and everything. in the time you will have in determining which angles to make bends at it would be so much easier and save a lot of time to just buy it. if you dont consider your time worth anything then just make your own. do a search for benders cause i think its been mentioned a few times before

Wow, the S & W pre-bent stuff is really inexpensive!!!
I'm not as worried about getting the cage done now after all, thought it would end up costing me 6-700 overall. . . now only 169.95 plus shipping and some welding time. (Not me personally welding, my step dad) - just so gets the wrong idea about my welding abilities, lol.

just a recomendation for people looking into building a cage.
READ THE RULES 3 TIMES then talk to a tech inspector in your area
different sactioning bodies have different rules of what they will and will not allow and such, IE a NHRA cage would be turned down in an instant from any road racing sactioning body.
and about the tubing used and thickness and such, again READ THE RULES each sactioning body has there own rules of what will and wont work for certian weights and what type of material to use,... ect.
I don't know the drag racing rules or if they are online but here are the websites were you can find road racing rules
http://www.nasaproracing.com and http://www.scca.org just look around the the CCR (club codes and regulations) on the nasa site and on the scca site look for he GCR (sorry dunno what it stands for).

The drag racing rules are actually a slight bit more strict I think. I am more interested to know in the Sw stuff. Is that secon set of downs behind the seats leagally considered another point and or woudl cutting them off be ok?
Edit: just dont install the extra downs (if legal
) ahh, do it yourself, how great!

I went home and reviewed the old rulebooks last night, and NO those cages are not "completely legal" but can be made so with ease. The extra downs on them can be omitted as they are not needed, but you have to add in the diagonal brace behind the front seats. I think thats all he mods you have to do in order to make it go, still seems like a good deal though. I am gonna' do it!
Well, I built it to road race standards, so it should pass!
And from what research I've done, road race cage requirements are usually much MORE strict than drag racing. But I'm not running a 9 second car, so take that for what it's worth...
