My setup is a semi built b18c - stock sleeves - running a low boost of around 7 psi and high boost of 14 on pump gas.

I picked up a catch can and put it in the line from my stock pcv to the intake manifold. I drove quite a bit, and as I suspected - no oil in the can. (also have a breather filter on the valve cover nipple)

I am trying to decide between two setups, or a variation of either.

1. Remove the stock black box and pcv from the block, plug the bottom hole and run from the top hole to the catch can, then to the intake. This however would still only vent in vaccume, and also allow oily vapors to be drawn into the intake, even though there is no actual oil in it.

2. Remove the stock black box and pcv, plug the bottom hole, and run a line from the top hole down toward the ground and let it vent into the atmosphere. This should vent all the time, reguardless of boost or vaccum. (no emissions in my area)

The catch can I have is not filtered, so I can't really see a way to use it without letting oily vapors into the system.

Advice please?

what I did with my generic ebay catch can was drill/tap a 1/4" NPT thread into the top, put in a brass fitting, and put a filter on that fitting. ran the PCV valve and the breather to the can and capped the hole on the intake manifold. not the best solution at all but it was easy.

OK, so as I stated before, now my catch can is just in line with the line from the PCV to the intake manifold. It is catching a little oil now (before I didnt think it was catching any at all), but it still is only venting in vaccume.

Is it possible to keep my catch can in the line from the PCV, but instead of running it on to the IM, cap off that hole, and run the line from the PCV to the can, then to the intake side of the turbo? That would vent during boost, but would it create enough vaccume to vent when out of boost? any problems with that?

on my boosted D, i am disconnecting the hose form the PCV to the IM and plugging that hole, then i am running that hose to an air compressor water separator (take out filter in the separator) and then running the other end to my downpipe as a vacuum line. pretty simple and very cheap too.

I'm using an air compressor water separator as well (cambell housfield) or whatever from wal-mart for like 12.97. My setup sounds the same, only instead of running it to my downpipe I want to run it to the intake side of my turbo.

where exactly is a good spot on the intake side of turbo??

 

i'm running the same thing, but just left it inline to the IM. that's where the line goes, so why move it? that's what your pcv valve is for. you can drain that thing by popping the cap off the bottom and pressing the pin in. just make sure you've got a cup or something under it

 

they tell you to move the line off of the IM becuase the added pressure of boost will make your ONE -WAY valve not open because of the added pressure on the line and cause crankcase pressure to build up and not be able to vent properly causing damaged ringlands......

 

I will be welding a fitting onto my turbo intake, it is about 24" long (3" pipe, 3" cone filter), I'll probably go about 6 inches from the turbo housing.

 

hmm..... maybe that's why i'm getting vapor outta my valve cover breather. compression test looks good

 

not to steal this thread but i have a question has anyone hooked a catch can up to the intake mani and the intake on the turbo? that way you can have "pull" in vac. and boost?

Just hooking it to the intake of the turbo gives you "pull" in vac and boost...no need to hook it to the I/M and let the oily vapors get in there and lower your octane. The turbo always sucks, whether in boost or not...so you always have an effective pull.

I heard that if you hook it up to the inlet turbo side, it pulls the vapors and put all the dirt and gunk in the turbo, making it all dirty. The downpipe would be better.

I used to run without pcv, just an open tube facing down, but the car didnt feel good as when I had the pcv connected to the im with an inline catch can. Is there anyway to keep the pcv and also have it vented in while in WOT? How about running this system: black box---&gt;air filter---&gt;pcv--&gt;intake manifold? would it work?

 

how would you connect the line to the downpipe? steel braided maybe? what would withstand the heat?

the catchcan is supposed to catch the junk before it goes into the turbo inlet.
