Interchangeable Turbo Parts??
When the time arrives, I plan to rebuild my turbo myself. I have seen "opened" turbos and noticed all the components...bearings, washers, snap rings, shaft, etc.. My question is ..can you replace the bearings for some ball-bearing units? Im pretty sure if this was possible, the turbo would spool a whole lot better and be more efficient. What else is the difference between the two.. ball bearing turbos vs. non-ball bearing turbos besides the two bearings. Any advice would be appreciated.
No. You cannot swap bearing types. You can swap CHRAs if you want to go with ball bearing (if your turbo is even available with a BB CHRA), but that would be about as expensive as buying a new turbo anyway.
