Where to buy Bolts for engine!
I am sick of looking at rusty bolts on my engine. Does anyone know of a good place to buy new bolts and nuts for our Hondas besides the dealer. The dealer charges over $1.00 for a single bolt.
If you know the length, thread pitch, size, etc., check out McMaster-Carr (google them for a link; mine's on my work computer). They sell just about any fastener and bolt you can think of, in lots of grades and finishes.

Yeah man, find out the size and go down to the hardware store with some empty pockets
Or do what I usually do if Im buying something in bulk, when you throw it all in the bag and have to write down the serial number or whatever, write down the number for like .10 cent washers
Can get 30 bolts for a couple bucks
They ****** wanted like $6/bolt for the tranny/engine bolts, I just threw like 15 in a bag, marked em as like .35 cent bolts, the girl at the register isnt gonna know ****

I dont want to go to the hardware store store and buy cheap *** bolts that will break with 20lbs of torque.
I am looking for automotive grade at least grade 5. I didnt think to look in mcmaster-carr. Good info. And $1.00 per bolt is crazy! I need alot of bolts so it will add up. I mainly need the flywheel bolts and the valve cover cap nuts. The valve cover nuts are $1.95 a piece and the flywheel bolts are $5.00 a piece from the dealer. I need 8 flywheel bolts so that's $40 and 8 cap nuts so that's $16. $56 from the dealer and that's not even half of the bolts and nuts that I need. I would easily spend $100 at the dealer for everything I need. It adds up quick! I will have to check McMaster-Carr.
to stealing. What comes around goes around! Its all about Karma. I used have a stolen motor sitting in my garage and a month after i got it my CRX was stolen. So from that day on I dont steal or deal with stoloen goods.

Um these were grade 8 bolts
Bolts is a little than engines and I still paid for something
Just find out what pitch and size you need and grab em form the hardware store
You think the bolts are only good to 20ft/lbs? You better move out because those suckers are holding up your house right now, there obviously strong

I got the majority of my bolts from ACE Hardware. But Tranny Bolts, Flywheel Bolts, I think of those in the same class as head studs (i know the are not but they are very important), I ONLY GO OEM or ARP, but that is my opinion. Good luck with what ever you choose to do

Thanks for all of the input guys! I found someone on H-T that has the flywheel bolts so I'm set there. I checked home depot for some stuff but their grade 8 selection in metric sucks. Plus I didnt see any bolts or nuts that were the gold color like oem. I forget what kind of coating it is. Its something chromate I think. I have bought bolts from Home Depot before and have snapped them with very litlle torq so that's why I didnt want to use them. It probably doesnt matter too much on nuts though! Its too bad that Honda doesnt make a bolt and nut assortment kit for the basic stuff. Oh well I will keep searching!

Whatever you do don't buy fomr the hardware store. I'm majoring in automotive technology and mechanics at my college. One of the first things my instructor said about bolts is not to buy from hardware stores. There is difference, torque is always stronger on an engine, than lets say a house. Plus an engine is completely different than house(obviousley, no comparison). So the bolts should NEVER be interchanged, that is why you get what you pay for. If you do buy hardware bolts, be prepared for a short life span, and anything in that matter. Good luck on finding good cheap bolts!!!
Just a friendly warning, from someone a little educated.

Thats not entirely correct. The bolts will be the same as far as size goes. What you want to look for is the grade of the bolts. For example, house may use say Grade 5 bolt, on a car you would want maybe a grade 7 or 8 depending on the part. Both of which can be acquired at hardware stores.

As far as hardware store bolts go, grade 8 is grade 8 no matter where you buy them and they will be plenty strong for automotive applications. One thing I noticed is the OEM bolts have smaller (sometimes) head sizes than the standard grade 8's. So if replacing one bolt, make sure it matches the rest for the application. Stainless steel bolts are usually inferior (strength) to OEM or grade 8. You can get high grade SS bolts, but they are quite expensive.

Yeah I have some other metric bolts lying around but I noticed that the bolt heads were different in size and were odd numbered; plus I dont know what grade they are. I dont want to have to use an 11mm wrench and a 13mm wrench. I dont want to add anymore sizes into the mix.
i agree with the whole hardware store arguement on here, but i do have to say that a lot of the bolts on there are grade 10, which needless to say good luck finding at a hardware store. if you do find them, good luck, but don't expect to. if you don't care that they don't look brand new (think pressure plate, tranny, etc.) go to a junkyard or something. if you want new looking, order off the website
Screw Lowes and HomeDepot. Head to your local Ace hardware or something like that. The one down the street from me has an awesome selection and they have people who actually know what they are talking about if you need help finding something.
