auto trans in 99 ex

auto trans in 99 ex went bad will a 92 and up work
My friend has a 99 civic ex auto and the tranny went bad. Would any d series work in it from 92 and up. Or is there difference in the trannys from 92-95 to 96-2000 civics.

How do you know this for a fact?
The 92-95 has a cable downshift and the 96-00 is computer controlled. They will not interchange.
