94 Civic EX Auto - Will any 92-95 Auto Trans work without ECU modification?
I have a 1994 Honda Civic EX Auto. The reverse gear just crapped out so Im gonna swap the whole trans before all the D gears go as well. This is a DD car so Im keeping it auto.
Will any 92-95 auto trans work on the car without any ECU modification? If so, do any other years work without any modification?
Thank you,

I know any 92-95 Civic auto trans will work no mods at all. So thats your safest bet. Im not sure if 96-00 auto trans will work because the OBD1-OBD2 change. Someone else will have to shed light there..

'92 - '95 are all interchangeable, EX models are geared slightly higher unlike their manual counterparts for lower highway cruising RPM. '96 - '00 are completely different from an electrical perspective and don't work.

What is needed to make a 96-00 auto work in a 92-95? I ask because someone is selling his auto trans from a 99 ex and says he can make it work in my 94 ex. I just wanna make sure this doesn't turn into a huge flop

Its just flat out not going to work without major complications, let me put it this way, its significantly easier to swap in a manual tranny than it is to try put in a '96 - '00 automatic. If this guy is telling you he can make it work he's never tried it before.

Just to lay out what it would entail heres a list of what would need to be done:
-intake manifold and throttlebody needs to be swapped out for one from a '96 - '00 automatic EX
-need to run an OBD2 automatic Y8 ECU (engine also wont run quite right due to timing differences between the Z6 and Y8)
-numerous wires need to be run for the extra sensors and solenoids on the OBD2 tranny, as well as splicing in the OBD2 ecu plugs (auto conversion harnesses are usually very pricey)
-secondary O2 sensor will have to be wired in
-CKF trick will need to be performed
-fuel tank will need to be swapped out for one with a fuel tank pressure sensor

Thanks. That's definitely more work than I would like to do in this car.

I wouldn't tell him to swap any 92-95 tranny becaues if he doesnt swap an ex one, then it wont shift right. When I bought my car it was automatic and it ended up that it had a P2E DX ECU and a 98 DX tranny (unless I read the code wrong and it was an EX) in it. The car did not shift right at all. It would go into high RPM all the time for no reason. And took way too long to shift. Eventually I got a P2P EX ECU but that didn't really help the shifting problem at all.
We had the same issue with an accord that my buddy bought to flip, he had to change the tranny, and he ordered another auto tranny from japan for $400, but since the gearing wasn't the same the car never shifted right.

^ Just a little update on this. I did end up having shifting issues with that tranny, and a CEL for P0715 because it was an EX tranny, that said it *shouldn't* matter as much with a '92 - '95 Civic since they don't have a mainshaft speed sensor. It may still shift a little weird though.
JDM automatics are almost always different than their USDM counterparts and generally can't be used.

That just sounds like a bad tranny to me. When I had to replace the tranny in my mother's '96 hatch I ended up using one from either a Canadian Si coupe or Acura EL (same as USDM EX tranny) haven't had any issues with it shifting weird at all.

but yeah i guess any 5th gen. tranny will work but it might run shitty afterwards if it's not the right one

Torque converter bolts are kind of a pain, nothing serious though, the biggest thing is the automatic is a lot heavier than the 5 speed and a bit bigger. Not really anything major though.

Re: 94 Civic EX Auto - Will any 92-95 Auto Trans work without ECU modification?
yeah i know what you mean. i had a z6 tranny then it took a dump on so i took it to a shop, they replaced it and when i drove the car again, the shift points were all really high and didnt feel right, when i look at the tranny it said 1.5 on it and thats when i realized i didnt have the right tranny installed.
but yeah i guess any 5th gen. tranny will work but it might run shitty afterwards if it's not the right one

my ex i swapped the tranny and i had no clue what it came out of all i knew is that it was out of a 92-95 honda so i swapped it and fired it up worked great... went to go drive it the shifting points were all wrong so i took a leap of faith and got the throttle position cable and that was on the other tranny swapped that and the shifting points are perfect.
