My Brother was driving his '99 Civic SI, stopped at a light and was unable to get the car moving again. It seems like the clutch finally wore out, but I had asked him if he had noticed any slippage prior to this happening. He said he never noticed the clutch slipping so this is odd that it would just go out like that. Could the problem be from another source within the transmission besides the clutch? With the car running, I can shift it from 1st to 5th gear and let the clutch go and the car will not stall. I also noticed that the speedo was registering speeds of up to 20mph once I let it go from 3rd, 4th, 5th gear and reverse. There are no leaks in the hydro line and the pedal operates properly. I inspected the release fork and it also operates properly. Does anyone know if there are other possible problems causing this before I pull the tranny and buy a new clutch?

 

We'll it turns out the passenger side axle popped out of the tranny. The shop that repaired my brothers Civic SI used a Del Sol Vtec axle. Although they share the same B16 engine, the axle is longer by 1" on the Civic. Even the local Car Quest could not figure our why they kept ordering me the wrong axle. It turns out that their inventory had the two models mixed up as well. The '96-'97 Del Sol Vtec axles were actually for the '99-00 Civic SI's and the Civic had the Del Sol axles. WTF. So always check your Haynes or Chiltons manuals. Anyway, I helped them figure out their little problem but still had to pay $200 for the axle. Damn.
