Type R pistons on LS rods (ive searched)
Ive looked around and cant seem to find a straight answer here. Im wanting to install JDM Type R pistons on my B18B LS rods. Some say I need to take off 1mm off the small end of the rod, some say only the CTRs you have to do it. Will they fit right on? Anyone that knows 100% please respond. Thanks

only ls pistons and b16 (pr3 p30) pistons fit directly on ls rods. <--PERIOD 1mm need to be shaved off both sides of the small end for remaining bseries pistons (itr, ctr, etc) I personally would go with pr3 or p30 pistons because the compression it gives you is higher and still very streetable, not to mention that you dont have to machine your rods
How much help is the friction coating on the ITR pistons though? I figured it would be worth taking 1mm off, to get the higher CR, friction coating, and dont they have bigger valve reliefs?
You need to mill the small end of the rods.
All B-Series Vtec pistons should have the same size valve reliefs since they all have the same size valves.

Yah anyone got some info if that would be worth it, I was also thinking of going P73 pistons but if the only huge diff is friction coating then maybe save some money getting b16 pistons and not having any extra machining

i asked the same question, i got a lot of bullshit this and bullshit that.
i ended up going with the pr3 pistons because I personally thought it was a better choice. i think itwill come down to a few good reasons on both sides and then you just have to make the choice.
good luck

I have had two ls vtec motors built using ls rods and type r pistons. One was jdm type r and the other usdm type r. Not only is the piston coated on type r which usually costs $120+ a set if you do it aftermarket, the ring lands are significantly stronger on type r pistons than on a b16 piston. You do have to take 1mm off the ls rod, but this is cheap $50-$70 at a good machine shop. My motor builder does this himself on a mill. The ls rod has nice bolts from the factory and machining it to fit in the piston does not take away from its function or reliability. Type R pistons will hold up better to nitrous and detonation. Worth it
