So I was doing a headgasket job, and had everything lined up and together and one of the other guys knocked the cams out of place, now I cant figure out how to TDC everything, I know theres 2 up arrows on each of the cam gears but how do I get the timing belt pulley(crank) to TDC? can someone please explain or send me a picture, Im lost and need to have this done tonite Thanks guys

 

what engine? Most DOHC motors have a hole in the cam with an eyehook looking thing above them, line these holes up and put the crank at TDC with the lines etched on the crank pulley, then put on the belt and your done

 

the only way i can think of is to set ur cams to TDC first, loossen the tensioner and take the belt out. set ur crank pulley to TDC or 16 degrees and put the belt back on the cams, tigthen up ur tensioner.

some1 correct me if im wrong or missing info.

Look down the side of the block, there will be 2 little nubs that stick out from the timing belt cover that look like this

_______ <- Timing belt cover
....VV..... <- nubby things, periods inserted for spacing!

I believe if you sight down those, you'll see a mark further down on the cover and you line this up with the one white mark alone on the crank pulley. You know this is the TDC mark because there will be 3 other marks to the left of it just a little bit over on the pulley, these are your 14/16/18 degree marks.

Or at least thats how it looks on my d-series.

 

it DOES NOT have to be as complicated as everyone is making this out to be, man!@!@

pull the sparplug out and stick something long(2+ft) down in #1. TDC will QUICKLY become apparent.

b16a2 motor by the way...

I got the head gasket changed, torques 22lbs then 61lbs in sequenced order, got everything together and TDC, hoses on everything, started the car up ran great for about 30seconds then oil came spraing out in the back corner of the head next to the transmission... I took it BACK APART! and everything was right, gasket was on smooth and everything called the parts place and they said faulty head gasket? Is there anything else it could be so I dont run into the same problem tomorrow? Thanks guys...

You got a OEM honda HG i assume.....

 

Im not sure which brand the kid got, he got it from Advanced Auto Parts and it was an aftermarket brand not Honda, I heard that is most likely the first problem... I sold the Del Sol to the kid and promised I'd help change the gasket and he got the parts Im just helping with the work and he's using my shop... Is there anything else it could've been or def. the head gasket?

 

Well most likely its because you didn't use an OEM honda HG. But aside from that you could have had that problem due to improper toque specs on head bolts, warped head, etc...
But try an OEM honda HG and go from there.

and I did what the specs showed on Honda Tech thread for torqueing it said First 22lbs then 61lbs and thats what I saw on Honda Swap too... so hopefully just the head gasket brand... thanks again any other ideas what else could be wrong or think thats it?

 

dsounds nlike i was on upside down. like the VTEC oil was being blocked. take a closer look next time u install

 

is this a new head? Did you remove the oil plugs?? Copper allen key plugs.

Usually oil doesn't spray out of the mating surface unless something is REALLY off

Nice sandels BTW. Tell that ****** kid to spend a little more money and BUY ****** HONDA OIL FILTERS TOO!!! And honda oil, this is just IMO. I never use any fluid that isn't Honda (except oil, that's RoyalPurple).

 

OEM **** is so overhyped and overpriced. I've used Felpro gaskets all the time and never had any problems with them or any other non honda gasket or oil filter or fluids for that matter. Hell I'm a mean HG reusing ****! Just wipe it down and then spray some copper spray on that bad boy. MLS headgaskets rule! lol That filter looks like a Mobil 1 filter from the color of it and those are really nice if not better then the OEM filters. If it's a HAMP filter then maybe not but Mobil 1 is

 

my manuals says to line up the cams wit the arrow both pointing at 12:00 and align the crank pully wit the arrow on the timing cover wit the last white mark on the crank pully..then everytime u turn the crank 180* it will be the next cyl. TDC.

 

OEM **** isint made by honda so who cares.

i use mobil1 oversize filter (M105) for breakin, and moniter oil pressure carefully.

i use penzoil dyno oil and redline synthetic

ACL bearings cometic HG u get the idea

we foundout the head bolts were stretched the shop said from whoever pulled the head the last time? so now he's searching for new bolts...
