I've searched but with little info...
Here's the deal, In nov. i bought a brand new Magnaflow cat-back and a Magnaflow high flow cat. It's supposedly all stainless, but i'm getting a lot of surface rust on it..??? Is this normal? I'm gonna try to clean it up and put some high temp paint on it...good idea? I'll have some pics up soon i hope.

i had magnaflow mufflers on my sc:

they were advertised as stainless steel mufflers, but i could stick a magnet to the body of the muffler, not to the tip though. they never rusted (and i live in the rust belt), so mild steel must be used internally. btw, them mufflers were much heavier than i expected.
i also used to have a tsudo stainless exhaust and a magnet wouldnt stick to any of it, but on the underside after a year, i noticed a few brown coloring, probably rust.

I will tell you what I know from my sailing experience. There are about 6 different grades of stainless steel. The grade refers to the amount of chrominum in the steel. The more chrominum is added to stainless the less it rust but the weaker the stainless steel is. I would not coat it with anything. Polish the rust off with a good marine stainlesss steel polish. It will have a protectant as part of the polish. If it has rusted quickly it will need polish on a regular basis to keep it clean. There is another alternative. You can use an acid to remove to rust. I had this done on my Cheoy Lee Sailboat and it did not last very long. The polishing was the best thing to slow it down and keep it at least in check. It is probably surface rust and has little to do with how long it will last unless it is really crappy stainless.

Haha, very true. Don't get me wrong, it's much better than regular steel exhausts. I think it's the fact that i'm a fanatic and like to keep my things in nice shape. But yes, I agree on the polish and am anitcipating on doing it this weekend!

That's a great tip man, I'll keep that in mind

use an SOS pad to clean it...it will take the rust off very easy... i had to use them on an old set of chrome rims i had, made them look like a brand new nickel!!!
If you put a magnet up to it and it sticks its not real stainless its aluminized steel
high grade stainless isnt magnatized i would just take a sos pad to it often and get blue magic metal polish for the tip and the high temp paint idea will probably just burn off in a few weeks and smell really bad

I've read that T304, the most common grade stainless used in exhausts, is actually the lowest grade stainless that exists. As mentioned earlier, the higher the grade, the more resistant it is to corrosion.

The differences are not only chrome & nickel content, but a lot more than that. There's no 'better or worse' grade, it's all about the composition, strength, & lots more.
