Default Problem with clutch?

Ok, I have a 97 Civic EX coupe with about 80,000 miles on it. I just bought this car in November '04 and every once in a while lets say I'll be stopped at a light and I'll have the car in neutral. I push in the clutch and try to shift into 1st gear but it won't! So I shift it back into neutral, let off the clutch and try again and it works. Help anyone?
