Outside of sleeve chipped??
I'm currently rebuilding a z6 and when I got down to the block I found something that seems to be a problem... The outsides of the sleeve seems to be chipped. (this is on the bottom end of the block, I'm not sure if its the same on the top yet) The "chips" seem like they could have been caused from erosion, but I am not sure. The engine ran fine when taken from the car. What should I do? Can this be fixed? I will post some pics if my description doesn't explain my situation.
Let me know what ya think.

I dont know how that would be possible, took the engine from the car and put it on a stand... then I took it apart and found this, I dont understand because the car ran fine and didnt burn any oil etc with 188,000 miles on it.
Haha, I'm hoping that was a joke.
The engine was originally owned by my brother, he took very good care it... and like I said it ran fine when pulled.
I guess nobody has seen this before???

Those coolant jackets look like ****.
More than likely the coolant was extremely old and began eating at the metal. It's common... on american cars.
This is why it's advised people do coolant flush's every 30k or so. I've seen it on alot of old iron block engines.

sounds about right. can it be fixed, yes... but I'd say it's not really worth it. it looks usable but I can see it causing head gasket failure...

Thats what I was worried about. I figured there would be some cracks also but I could not find any.
Thanks for the responses... I'm off to find a new block now

That's nasty as hell.</TD></TR></TABLE>
I dont really car what the pistons looks like, i've got new a6 pistons to replace them
But it looks like I need to just find a block that is in better shape for the rebuild.
Edit: I'm building a little crx project to see what I can get out of a d-series engine. This engine was free (it ran well when taken from the car) I've bought a few things for the build like pistons, camshaft, titanium ret., better springs, clutch, zex flywheel etc... I've got all the wiring done and waiting for an engine. A local shop is going to help me with the bottom end rebuild and valve job. This f'ed up block will be setting me back a little but oh well.

I've been doing some thinking about this project... I think I'm just gonna sell all the parts I've bought and buy a b16. If I bought the b16 it would be about the same price as the money I'll be putting into the z6. Not sure yet though...
