broke valvecover bolt on D16z6...
while looking at my valve cover, I noticed a bit of oil leak on the middle valvecover bolt. Took off the valve cover (the middle bolt was kinda lose) and the seal was okay. So put back on the valve cover...screwed the bolts back on...and I guess I overturned it too much...broke the middle bolt in the screw hole(don't know what that part is called). I need advice on how to replace it. Don't want to drill.
can't use vice grips to pull it out. The bolt broke and snaped off. If I put the valve cover back on...the hole where the valve cover goes on will be left open. And oil will be flying out of it, I was told to plug it with something, but on the safe side, I'm thinking about going to the junk tomorrow and buying that piece for it. Just need to know what it is called.
Hmmm, the same thing happened to me. I had to drill and use an EZout to get the thing out. Mine wa on the back though, so every time I'd try to turn with the EZout, it'd go about 1/8 revolution. It took an hour to get it out.
With the D16Z6, the front middle bolt is bolted to the rocker arm assembly, you'll either have to EZ-out the broken bolt, or you'll have to plug up the hole with something and RTV around it. You could always get creative with JB weld

what is an EZout? And the bolt that snap was the one that goes into camshaft holder #3. I went to the junk, they wouldn't sell it to me unless i buy the head and I went to the dealer...same thing. Was also told to take it to a machine shop and have it drill it out. My options now is either to get a new head and take this one to get it machine drill, take it to the machine shop, or plug it and drive it.
tehy are opposite threaded drill bits you drill a hole into what you need out and then you spin the EZ out in the hole and then turn it out and it grabs it and twist it out they work wonders you can get them at your local auto parts store (advanced auto, auto zone)
A screw extractor is the only way to do it, unless you want to remove your rocker assembly and drill it out on a drill press. Hand drills are a no no.
This is a Ez-out, Screw extractor, or whatever else you want to call the bloody thing!

This is where you can buy a QUALITY ONE! Sears ones are ****, so is nearly everyone elses. Sure sears will replace it but what good is that when its busted off in your head? There brittel and break period.

You need to find a U-pull-it junk yard where they just have the cars there and you take the stuff off by yourself...
Maybe they would let you take one off of a blown engine or something...

This happened to me too. What you need to do is drill it out making sure that you dont get any shavings in the head. What i did was wrap a towel around the bolt and catch the shavings when its out, vaccum any left over chips with a vaccum to get them out of there. Then what you can do is get heli-coils and re-tap a bigger hole that the heli-coil fits in. The heli-coil will then be the right thread and a new bolt will tighten right up. Good luck with it
bought a new head...considering taking the camshaft holders (I think its called the lost motion assembly...someone confirm please) off of it and replace it with the one that has the bolt broken in it. Would just take off the head, but it would be too much. Want to know if it would be hard to take off the camshaft holder? And when taking them off, will the rocker arms and rocker shaft be coming off too? Thats what I'm worried about. Thanks.
couldnt you just cut a slit on the tip of the broken bolt and use a srewdriver to get it out? you know, kinda like taking the map sensor off.
I'm going to take it to a machine shop and have them take it out. But that is after I replace it with the part coming from the other head I just bought.
