What is/causes clutch chatter?
Hi I'm new to H-T. I did a search on clutch chatter and read a post that said it had nothing to do with noise and it was just vibration when engaging the clutch. So is 'clutch chatter' a noise? What should it sound like? and what causes it? I have a 95 GSR with an ACT HD Clutch and Fidanza flywheel and recently its been making weird noises (squeking mixed with light scratching) when its about to engage from a stop. Also, I can reproduce the sound by lightly tapping the gas pedal while in gear so I'm not sure if something's wrong with my car..
Clutch chatter is due to a warped flywheel. The car will shutter when starting from a stop. When you are stopped a you push in the clutch do you get a noise? If so, it's probably your throw out bearing. If the sound goes away when you push in the clutch you may have a bearing going bad in the tranny on the main shaft. What happens at a stop when you push the clutch in the mainshaft will stop rotating so if any sound goes away it's indicative of something in the tranny.
The sound only happens when im letting the clutch pedal out. It's kind of a scratching/squeaking sound and I can make it happen again by tapping the throttle while in gear. It is also more noticeable at low rpms or when rolling to a stop while in gear. I've read all of the recent posts about clutch problems and the archived topics but I'm not sure if I'm experiencing the same problems since I dont have a 'click' sound, I don't get a sound while in neutral, and I don't have a stock clutch. Could it be from improper break-in of the clutch & flywheel? It's probably impossible to diagnose over the net so I'll just take it to the dealer when I get some time....but I wouldn't mind any comments or help till I get it there Thanks.
