Default timing belt broke and mechanic said engine is shot

The timing belt on my 90 Prelude broke and the mechanic told me some of the belt pieces fell into the engine.
He said the engine is shot and that I should junk it.
Is this possible and how can I check for myself.

Drain the oil and check it. Also, pull the oil pan.

Thanks
If that is the case, would an engine rebuild or swap be cheaper?

I'd go for a swap.

I don't see how that is possibile, unless the 3rd gen valve cover has some kind
of opening on it which it couldn't because then oil would get on the belt.

You probably have bent valves though.

I agree! Probably bent valves, and screwed up head. But I doubt the belt got into the engine.

Unless the belt pierced the block or head. How did pieces of it end up in the engine? It doesnt make sense....

The most common damage would be bent valves or chipped pistons. Only way to tell is to take off the head. If you got severe damage, i would swap in an H22!! That would be sick on a 3rd Gen.

if its really screwed...do the h22 swap. those things are faster than hell. But the belt can't get into the engine, that doesn't make any sense.

The belt did not fall into the motor, but you can bet your *** that you bent some valves and probably dented/chipped your pistons.

Grab a new longblock and throw it in; they're not that much money for good ones.

Find yourself a JDM B20A and swap it in. It's a direct fit, and it'll cost you about $600 for the complete engine.

H22 swaps are very expensive and since Place Racing went out of buisness, nobody makes 3rd gen H22 mounts anymore (not that Place's mounts were that great to begin with).

Have you ever heard of a rod breaking and punching a hole through the block? Same thing here.
