Default speedometer problem

okay heres the deal, my pal has an 87 crx with a b16 swap, im thinking i might buy it, but the problem is that the tach and speedo dont work, he has the HF gauge cluster, which from what we understand should have worked with the b16, but it doesnt, is there anything that can be done without extensive fiberglass work? or would i be better off making my own cluster with autometer gauges? OH BTW is the speedo a cable or sensor for that car?

Yes, the 87 has a cable speedometer, and so does the hf. As far as the tach not working, the solid blue wire is the wire that connects to the negative side of the coil to work the tach. (88-91 diagram) I'll try to find out 100% fro the 87 though.

Hope this helps some.

if the speedo doesnt work then the v-tec wouldnt be kicking in right? u might just need to get a speed sensor from a 90-93 integra

Yes, without a speed signal vtec will not kick in. I'm not sure about using a integra cluster.

ive got a cluster from an integra but that will require some real pricey fiberglass work to get it in right???

just a tip. If you can carve something the way you want it to look, try some expanding foam. Spray it and let it dry then shape it with a knife, then put some fiberglass over it. It's a good way to customize stuff. It's easier than it sounds. Yes, without the speedometer sensor the vtec will not kick in, other wise you could rev your car up in neutral and listen for the vtec to kick in, or listen to motor bend some valves.
