Humming/whining noise !! is it the bearing? what is it?? Help
i hear this humming/whining sound from the passenger side like a wheel bearing is out. only happens at like 25 mph and up, i dont hear it when the clutch is pushed in, and i cant hear it on the expressway. maybe b/c its to high pitch? But heres the thing, on bumps the noise will flow with the bumps. I checked and nothing that i ca see is rubbing. I dont know what the problem is. ive had people listen to it, and nobody is sure.
It started making the noise when i put in a new itr tranny with 28k miles and replaced a shot axle for another, but im not sure how much better that axle was... the car shifts and drives fine. its just that noise...i dont have $ now to spend on a bunch of things that may be the problem. So, if anyone has had this problem and know how to fix it, please help me out and tell me how. thanks.

I am in the EXACT same boat you are in. I went to the shop today and when they took off the tranny, they thought it was the clutch, cause it was gone. So i replaced the clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing and it stopped for about 2 minutes. Then, i started hearing the sound again. I was told that it MIGHT be the mainshaft bearing. Who knows.. but it bugs the **** out of me.. it seems like i only hear it in the top gears too..
did you crack open the tranny and check all the bearings? I doubt it.
Im not being a smart *** or anything, but if it was a wheel bearing you would hear it wether or not the clutch was engaged. If its ONLY when you are in gear, im going to go with a bearing in the tranny. It shouldnt be that big of a deal tho, unless it gets really bad.
