civic timing
Could any one please tell me where are the crank pulley timing marks on a 97' civic dx 1.6L SOHC? I can see three marks together and one more futher to the right. There are no painted marks, red, white, taupe. Also after rotating the cam 3 teeth to set the tension on the belt I'm supposing I need to rotate it back to TDC ('UP') and then with the crank pulley in the correct position tighten it to 2000lbs/ft torque (or 137, whichever I decide). Yes? No? Thanks.
The TDC (top dead center) mark is the lonely one by itself. You should set it to TDC, and set the cam sprocket to TDC(make sure "UP" mark is facing up). Good idea to also verify the rotor button on the distributor is facing the #1 spark plug wire terminal on the distributor cap as well. Then rotate the crank ccw until the front/longest part of the belt is tight with no slack. Then you tighten the tensioner. When finished rotate the crank 2 full revolutions to make sure it turns freely (not hitting valves), and then make sure the TDC marks still line up.
Thanks but there's one thing I forgot to ask. There is a single tab on the lower timing cover right in the middle above the crank pulley. Is this where the 'lonely' mark should line up? Also if I understand things would the following procedure be correct?
1. Loosen tensioner
2. Remove crank pulley bolt
3. Rotate cam (cc) to TDC (up)
4. Verify rotor position is at #1 piston wire
5. Position crank pulley to TDC (‘lonely’ mark) and tighten
6. Rotate crank pulley to remove all slack on long side of belt
7. Tighten tensioner
8. Rotate crank 2 rotations
9. Verify timing marks line up
1. Loosen tensioner
2. Remove crank pulley bolt
3. Rotate cam (cc) to TDC (up)
4. Verify rotor position is at #1 piston wire
5. Position crank pulley to TDC (‘lonely’ mark) and tighten
6. Rotate crank pulley to remove all slack on long side of belt
7. Tighten tensioner
8. Rotate crank 2 rotations
9. Verify timing marks line up
There is also a mark on the crank gear that the timing belt goes around, and a corresponding mark on the oil pump (behind crank gear). This is what you should be looking at. The crank pulley will have to be off for you to see it. So take it off, and just put the bolt back in to use for rotating. You can't line up the crank pulley unless the lower timing belt cover is on, so that method is only used for adjusting the valves, not timing belt replacement. make sense? here is a pic of a B18C, but yours should be similar.
