Creaking noise coming from the front left side by the dash??
I have a creaking/barking noise coming from the front left side of the dash. Its really bugging me. It happens when I hit a bump, make a turn, or anything else of that nature. I assumed it was a loose bolt from the window support, but the sound does not change when the window is rolled up or down. Any suggestions ?? It sounds like a metal on metal torquing sort of noise ??
help... noise is getting louder, it sounds like a barking noise, coming from the pillar area... what could it be ?? It is so damn annoying...

Suspension parts go through alot of wear and tear and eventually they will start to creak and/or bark like you were describing. Best advice is above. You sure its not your shock? Might be blown.
EDIT: Damn Chris F. That avatar makes me dizzy!

You may want to check the side dash panel (the plastic side piece you can only see when the door is open). I had a problem with mine making an awful noise. It was rubbing on the door opening trim/moulding.

I very occasionally hear a 'click' with mine - same spot. It was not anything obvious, I'd have to pull the dash to track it down. It can be hard to tell, but it definitely seems to be on the inside, not with the suspension.
I believe it to be one of those DC2 eccentricities. Like the crack in the center of the defrost grill (have it), or slow windows over time (not yet)

Sticky hatch latch? Sticky door locks? Oil burning? Stolen emblems? Got 'em!
3rd gear synchro grind? Not here.
There should be a thread with DC2 eccentricities that have 3 or more verified cases. There just has to be a lot of known crap on these cars with known resolutions.
There are 7 and 8 year old ITR's here... wow... old... Another few years, this will be a how-to-bondo forum... after that, chasing electrical gremlins and full-bushing-kits...

I used to have a few creaks and rattles. That problem was solved with the insallation of the new motor and 3" Thermal Exhaust. I hear nothing now.

I have exactly the same noise that makes me mad - it is like metal to metal or maybe glass to metal "sharp" clicks that come from the pillar, maybe from it's lower part near the dashboard.
It is very near my head when driving, so I tried to repair it all the last Saturday
First I thought it is something under the dash. I have tightened all the bolts, zip-tied all the wires, bang into the dash and listened to all the noises, but this didn't help. I thought that banging in various loations near the pillar/dash must make the same noise, but it doesn't! All the noises are different and not so "sharp".
I went to test drive my R:
1) opening my window - doesn't help.
2) holding my driver's mirror - doesn't help
3) holding by hand all the pillar inside and outside - no help
4) opening my doors - no help.
It still looks like coming from the driver's pillar.
Going home and searching further. Everything striped - the inside pillar cover, door inside cover, both windshield wipers, lower window plastic cover that covers the wipers, left window seal on the pillar. Every single bold tightened and checked. The noise is still there andd somehow more noticable.
As I opened my door while stopped, I heard the same noise again! By simply opening the door fully and fully closing, I can hear the metal to metal noise. WD40-ing the two door handles and the third in the middle - no help
.
After all that, it looks like some weld points in the frame came loose and so the metal sheets move and make this kind of noise? At the end, I just knew that I can't win this battle, so I filled the pillar with some sound deading material (or how you call it), put everything together and the sound is still bothering me
.

Ha! Sounds like a very good description of my chirp (like a cricket sound, metal on metal probably).
Mine sorta went away by itself. I still have no idea what it was. Hopefully it will go away for you. I was never able to figure out where it was coming from, but I heard it most of last year, but not this year for some reason.
It's a '98 too.

I also have this problem and tried holding the pillar while I drive. Still no help. It sounds like it also might be coming from the front fender so made sure that was tight. Its still there..arrhh
