SGT what would be Honda's reasoning not to put it in the USDM tranny's, is it because americans do more Highway Driving?

yes i think the american consumer had a lot to do with it.

American thinking: high revs = unreliable.

and high rev = 5000

The 4.78 not going in the U.S market has NOTHING to do with revs or freeway driving.

Why you ask?

Because the JDM '98 Sepc and up 4.78-equipped trannies have the taller 4th and 5th gears that are identical to the USDM GS-R 4th and 5th gears. Revs in 5th gear on a USDM ITR and a stock JDM '98 Spec ITR would be the SAME.

I can't give the real reasoning why, but I can at least tell you it isn't because if highway revs because of the GS-R 5th with the 4.78 being the same as the USDM ITR 5th and the 4.400 FD in terms of revs at a given mph.

We get shafted

You can always get the ATS 4.929 FD (It's bad -***, I've got one) and one-up our Japanese friends' stock '98 Spec ITRs.

not necessarily highway revs, but the fact that 1-3 are much shorter.

Well I saw someone specifically say highway driving, etc.

I really don't think 1-3 matters to the "general" public though. The general public doesn't buy the Type R, so the market here in the U.S for the Type R would never think that high revs are bad. It's such a limited quantity vehicle with a focused customer base - I don't really know what they're thinking when they give Japan and other countries all the good ITR stuff.

So the USDM and JDM will top out at about the same speed, meaning that highway driving will be about the same. If 1-3 are alot quicker, and 4-5 are that long, is it as balanced as the USDM tranny, or do you fall out of VTEC going from 3-4, or am i just talking out of my ***

Just wondering because I have always wondered this

The reason they have a different fd is to make up for the rotational weight of the 16" rims compaired to our 15". Atleast that is what i've heard.

Thats the thing though, they plan around the general public even though to us
its meant for a specific niche.
