what causes this, i have had numerous problems with my new car, and this is killing me, i just replaced the starter, and my wiring was good, battery was new, starter is new also, and nothing would work except when we rolled it back outta my driveway and i popped the clutch and she started right up , i knew it had to be something retarded, bc everything was working right, but something was wrong
thanks
bret
i am thinking this is the ignition switch but im not sure?!
thanks

So it's not starting unless you role it? If that is the case, get on your knees and push the clutch switch with your finger and have someone or yourself with your free hand turn the key. If the car turns on you are having issues with the clutch pedal contacting the switch.
Have you checked all your grounds and your battery cables? ALL of them? Check them again. Clean them with a wire brush, and see if that helps anything. Also, you state that the starter is new; did the problem happen immediately after you put the new starter in? Has that starter EVER started the car? Do you have your old starter handy? It's possible that you just got a crap starter, even if it's new or remanufactured. Not common, but POSSIBLE.
I'd look at the little stuff first, though. As mentioned above, check the clutch switch and make sure that it's working properly (because it's free to check that, and easier than pulling the starter out). Also, fiddle with the ignition switch. I've seen them go bad, but I've never seen one that was good one day and completely gone the next. If the ignition switch is going out, you should still be able to start the car with it by holding it in a different position while you crank the car. For example, I usually end up pushing down on the key while I'm cranking the car. If my car isn't cranking or doing anything at all with the key in the start position, I'd try pushing up or up and forward while cranking it, to see if that gets me a good contact inside the switch. Again, it's free to try it.
Hope this helps,
Mike

unless youve disabled the clutchlock, dont you have to put the clutch in to start it? so how would "starting in gear" be an issue? i always park in (first) gear. when im ready to go somewhere, i put the clutch in, turn it on, and go. no jumping issues or anything...
also id like to know the pros and cons of parking in gear!
