Default Timing marks, and valve adjustment homeade tool question

I dont have the timing cover with me,

There is a mark on the oil pump, and one on the timing belt gear. They call it the TDC mark on the helms manual

Does that signify, that the #1 cylinder is at top dead center?

Then another turn would be the next cylinder in the firing order correct?

I want to verify this, as the helms assumes the cover is on and tells me to refer to that mark on the cover. Being I dont have it, I want to use the mark on the oil pump cover.

ALso, can someone post that tool people have had arround on this fourm that I can home make to adjust the valves.... I cant find it, but I think it was like a wrench/socket vice grips and a screwdriver or something..

Help me out, Thanks

Those marks (sprocket & oilpump) are the same as the single TDC mark on the pulley & cover. That's good for setting the timing belt.

to do a valve adjustment (im assuming u got a b-series...like it matters but..) u need a 10mm socket (i believe) and feeler gauge or even just thin back of the notebook size cardboard. u wanna set the gap so the rocker arm is just able to move and not tight. to adjust them, u use the 10 mm and loosen or tighten as u stick the feeler gauge between the rocker arm and the valve.

I never use my valve-adjustment tool anymore. I just use a 10mm deep socket on a short extension with a screwdriver and three different feeler gauges to set the valve lashes.

Just follow the arrows on the cam gears to find TDC for each cylinder after you've installed the timing belt properly in sync.

viewed from thr front of the engine (not the front of the car...duh!):
Arrows UP = TDC #1
Arrows LEFT = TDC #3
Arrows DOWN = TDC #4
Arrows RIGHT = TDC #2

Every 180 degree rotation of the crankshaft moves the cams over to the next cylinder.

You don't have to be dead on TDC for every cylinder either. As long as the cam lobes are off the rockers (on the base circle as people would say), then you can properly set the valve lash. You can tell when the cams are on their base circles for a given cylinder b/c both of the cam lobes will point upwards, forming a V-angle when viewed from the front of the engine.

Put the pistons at mid-stroke, for example put the crank timing mark towards the left. This way you can spin the camshafts any way you want without any valves hitting the pistons.

Align the camshafts properly, then turn the crank directly to TDC. Then put on the belt.
