Default VTEC malfunction MIL on '04 EP

I have an '04 EP which i drive almost as much as the EK, and the other day i got a MIL on startup...The MIL went away after starting it up again the next day at the gas station, but i took it in to HONDA anyway and the code was stored as a VTEC malfunction. The silly-*** service writer asked when i changed the oil last, and i said about 9k ago, because i use Mobil 1 0w-20 and there is no point in changing it sooner than 10k intervals. He snickered at that statement and said that the service will not be covered because i did not change the oil @ 3k...well, the tech, who is a loongtime idol of mine and has always respected me for my SOHC build, did the diag on the car, told me it eats a little oil and the level got to the point where vtec was not happy (low about .75 quart+), and to keep the 10k intervals up, but just check the levels at 5k or so...He ate the cost of the check and told the service writer to revise his attitude toward me.

At any rate, is anyone else aware of a slight oil consumption issue with 10k change intervals with the EP?

I am just curious, the car is wonderful.

yep that code was most likely from lack of oil

I change mine every 3K BTW with zero consumption

Although it's not prominently outlined, we're actually advised to check the oil level at every fuel fillup.

Especially in the early stages, my EP3 K motor used quite a bit of oil...enough to worry me.

Now, however, at 55,000 miles, it never uses oil between changes. The excessive consumption stopped after the second oil change, pretty much.

Not sure if that's everybody's experience.

How many miles on your car?

i have 23 on it now; i went about 3k miles on the OE oil, then i went 10k miles on Castrol 5w-20, then i switched to Mobil 1 0w-20 last change...

There is no oil consumption for sure before say 4k miles, i know that because i checked around then...but i guess in the next 6k miles it ate some..

like i said, im not really concerned, but, i experience about the same loss with my 12.3:1 sohc, so it made me curious, that's all...

thanks you guys for your responses!!!

Whenever you redline the car it will burn oil. Driving under 5K rpm will not result in much oil burning as redlining every gear all the time.

I really feel that no matter what kind of oil you use...it should be changed at 3k miles. If you want to run expensive oil....that's fine...maybe try to change oil aroung 3k. Especially if you race or redline the vehicle often. It never hurts....maybe just your pockets!!

Well I experienced a similar thing on the track. I was running in my second session and noticed that my vtec was not engaging at 6k, but rather 7k. I pulled in and checked the oil. Well I did not see any. I added 2 qts. and it barley reached the first dot..

I had left the oil in the car for 5k miles. I change the oil every 35oo-4k miles. I used to use redline 5w20, but after that incident have since switched to redline 10w30.
