Passing smog in Cali with a engine swap
Hey, I have read just about everything about Cali engine swaps but still have some questions. I have a 94 Civic LX and it had the SOHC Non Vtec 1.5L 104HP engine. Well I changed out to a Vtec d15b I believe, the 130hp Japanese special edition from 93-95. I also have a cheesy cheap short ram intake, Holley Airmass headers and catback. I know the cat and Headers are 50 states legal and looked at the Cali website and they were legal. What I am unsure of still though is the engine itself. The engine is from the same year civic models as mine. Problem is when I got the engine put on he wasnt sure what year exactly it was, just that it was a import japan engine with about 60k miles on it. It actually came in from CAli as I am in AZ. I asked them to install everything to cali safe as possible but they also dont really know much about Cali laws here in AZ. So basically I am asking if anyone has any info or another resource telling me if this engine will be ok with minor Cali adjustments or if its going to fail with major probs. If anyone has any information, or a site that lists this engine as being legal etc. Thanx a lot
im a smog tech i work in north hollywood southern cali ur car wont pass because of the swap unless u get it Refree checked and thats a bitch to pass theyre ******** if u live around i can take care of it for u
im trying to pass my 90si crx with a b16a swap thats turboed can you help me too email me at anthony_215@hotmail.com
honestly if you have a 94 civic and its still an sohc motor i really doubt they are going to say anything to you its nothing all that drastic and the casting on the block still says d15 to start with and a majority of smog stations arent going to pick up on that especialy since many cars of that year came with a vtec motor. I think you should be fine.

Is there a way to check the engine for what year it is? Or does a Tech just have a guide saying this engine was made in so and so year and that these cars will have it? I am trying to find out how if it is possible the tech would know if my engine is a 93 or 94 or what.

There is no way they could know what year the engine is. If I were you though I'd ask the companies for the headers and intake if they could send you the carb sticker for the parts. That way I'm almost positive that you would pass smog with those at any normal smog station.

I am planning on moving to California in March. Where can I find the engine stamp? From what I was told by the guy who put it in, there is no stamp on my engine to indicate the year. Altho I read that if it says something like 9/2 or 90 or something like that on it that it indicates the year. Mine has 4 at different degrees saying 9/2 9/0 9/0 9/0. If thats of any help. If thats not it, where would the "stamp" be located cause I cant find anything on the head that would indicate anything and those numbers I listed were right above where the headers connect.
also, if I go in for a smog check and they do the visual inspection. Is the inspector going to look and assume anything? Since mine looks like a EX engine in the first place is he going to go about it normal, or do all inspections check vins etc? I figure the engine is and made for this car and year model etc looks just like the basic EX engine model that they wont think twice. But if they do a vis check and then check everything with a fine tooth comb its gonna get complicated. Also, my car is a LX anyways, so they prolly are gonna get leary at the fact that there is an EX engine in it.......
If u swapped a SOHC for another SOHC, dont worry. 95% of the smog places wont care. Hell, my 89 DX had a sohc ZC with the MPFI manifold and i passed fine, visual and everything. I even witnessed a friend of mine pass visual when he had an ebay intake and header (no CARB numbers). U have nothing to worry about, but just for the sake of it, throw on the stock air box and pipe.
edit: im talkin about Cali smog, not AZ. WTH u wanna know about cali stuff when u dont even live here?
