CA Smog law? simple swap
i looked in search and there are many diff opinions on this. i didnt really run into any topics with my situation.
i need to pay off some bills so im selling the car. i have a 94 dx coupe. the engine i have for it has 150k miles and is nowhere close to passing smog. i figured that i would replace it with the same engine with under 50k miles on it and get more money for it.
im getting the engine from a local used japanese engine shop. do i have to bother with taking the car to a ref or test only station? or will the car pass at a regular station without giving me any problems? i know that the engine has to be the same year or newer, but i dont know what would happen when the engine block number itself is run through the system. TIA

You have to report the swap and take it to the referee. Otherwise, if you don't and the buyer finds out, he might point the finger at you for not disclosing all the details about the car.

Re: CA Smog law? simple swap (Ricey McRicerton)
Thanks for the speedy reply. does it cost any money to go to the ref to get it inspected? and assuming i use my stock intake manifold and computer i shouldnt have any problems smoging the car right?

$30 for the test and $8.25 for the certificate. Just make sure all the emissioins equipment is connected. If it's just a replacement swap of the same engine, you should be fine...
