broke my timing belt.....
my friend and i were driving down a road and his timing belt broke in his 2000 si. im wondering if there was any damage done without pulling the head off. a few people say that becuase its a dual cam, all the valves are bent. i want to know if this is true? is there a possibility that the engine is fine and all i gotta do is re-time it and put the belt on?
thanks
thanks
my timing belt "walked" off of the cam gears and after fixing it everything turned out alright, its just a luck of the draw. Some people get lucky, some dont.
Whos belt broke, look at what u posted, you say first.. I broke my timing belt, then u say your friend in his 2000 si broke his, and then u reply, well I hope I'm like you then.
What a tangled web we weave... for no apparent reason!! lol jk
Good luck with the belt, maybe you are a fortunate one, i know of an occurance where the dist. locked up on a b16 and the timing jumped with no damage, but thats not a broken belt.

the timing belt keeps the valves and the pistons working in coordination. If the valves stop in the open position and the pistons (being pushed by the transmission) are thrusted upwards guess what's gonna happen? The valves are gonna be bent into submission.

no ****... but some people have escaped this with a stroke of luck lol and im wondering if that luck happening is more common then people say... i guess we will just have to find out soon.
Well Well Well the old broke timing belt trick. I love that one I do that at all the shows. No really I've seen some messed up things and a broke timing belt is one of them I've seen people drop valves from it and I seen peoples valves be fine after you never know. it really isn't to hard to take the head off and spend the 50 bones and get a new head gasket if its fine if not spend the money to fix it thats all I can say and good luck.

what does an interference motor mean?

cant he put a new belt on if thats all he wants to do then compression/leakdown test? but how much harder is it to pull the head off specially if he has to change the belt. and if the engine is old enough to break the belt shouldnt he do the the whole water pump and seals while hes at it?
Interference means you must have correct valve timing or your valves can hit your pistons. As in your case, most 'interference' motors would have bent valves.

but the guy several posts up said that having an interference motor would be lucky on my part... or was he being sarcastic lol

i ment to say that it is an interference motor and usually when the timing belt breaks the valves will smack the pistons.
sometimes a lot sometimes a little.
you might get lucky and not do any damage, but...
