Default Tight shifting

Hello all. I am having some troubles with my 94 GSR. The shifting has a very tight feel and sometimes I have to really try hard to get it completely into gear. It's getting very annoying. Now I bought this car from someone last year so I don't know exactly everything he did to it. He did tell me it had a "stage 2 clutch" but he didn't tell me exactly what kind. Sometimes I'll put it in reverse for example coming out of my driveway and I'll think I put it all the way in gear and when I try to back out it starts to grind and throws itself into neutral. Would the tight shifting have to do with the shifter, gearbox, clutch, or something else. I really have no idea. I am just looking for nice smooth shift out of my car. Anybody know what could be my problem.

the first thing to check is your manual transmission fluid. do you know the last time he changed it?

No I don't. How do I check for that fluid?

here's a basic guide on how to change it. since you don't know the status of your MTF, its not a bad idea to go ahead and replace it anyways, especially if your car has moderate mileage on it. i recommend going to the honda dealership and buying honda MTF (around $5-6/bottle). btw, this may not be the issue you're dealing with, but checking the fluid level is a good place to start.

do you have a short shifter installed? When i put my short shifter the shifting was a good bit stiffer. it didnt delay the shifting time at all just had to put a little bit more force on it. and my reverse does the same thing. just make sure get it the whole way in gear and if ur not sure double cluth and it will def. go in. good luck

Yes I believe I do have a short shifter. The guy who owned it before me put some really cheap mods on my car so he probably bought an EBAY short shifter. If that's the reason I just may try to find something a little smoother...any suggestions on a smooth shifter?

b&m short shifters are nice. with most short shifters your going to find some stiffness to it but its a little better plus it wont break as easy.

I think your short shifter linkage is the problem. I just installed my skunk2 short shifter last week, and tightened the nut a little too much and got the exact same symptoms you describe. I backed off the nut half a turn, and now my car shifts like stock again. Check the linkages right under the shifter, there is one lock nut that's very easy to overtighten.

Hopefully it's something as simple as the shift linkage. However, it might be the clutch...

B&M shifters for Hondas are junk in me experience.

The spacers that come with the Skunk2 shifters should have prevented any possibility of overtightening. Did you install all the spacers and hardware correctly? I have spacers on either side of the sealed bearings in my shifter, which makes the shifter feel the same no matter how tight you make the bolt/nut.

When my original clutch took a dump, it made it very hard to shift. I had to use quite a bit of force to get it into each gear. Since I replaced the clutch and switched to GM Synchrmesh Friction Modified fluid, even with my short shifter and 190K+ miles on my transmission, shifts are smooth as butta.

Does the tranny grind at all when trying to put it in gear? I have a 95 GSR and just before the tranny let go it was hard to shift and it didnt grind at all. I parked it one day and the fluid started draining out of it, the gears wore a hole through the casing. Good luck ask me if you have any more questions.
