1st to 2nd Problems
Of all shifts, its this one being a bitch. When I am shifting from 1st to 2nd at about 7400 rpms, I push clutch all the way in, pull down into 2nd, but it doesnt seem to want to engage, but grinds badly instead. Its been doing this for about two weeks now, pretty consistantly. I cant seem to figure it out, I am been making sure I am shifting correctly, but its still giving me fits. Could it be my synchros? Any idea's?
yes it could be... very possibly... very easily... Most likely... Check your clutch fluid though! Make sure your nto leaking... easiest ways to do it are to check fluid level and put the car in first with the clutch all the way down and rev it to abuot 6.5-7k and see it the car rolls or not... If it does, you have a leak! It may affect synchro timing slightly and that may be it... Most likely its both though unless its just a synchro... Or it could be a torn up gear... you shift from 5 to 2 or anythign bad like that recently?
just out of curiousity, how badly beaten do you think my 2nd gear its? Its grinded pretty hard about 5 times now. Do you think I am gonna need to replace the gear? Also, the problem seems to be more within the shifting process itself. When I shift at 7400, pull down into 2nd, it doesn want to pop right into gear, but takes a sec to pop in. I dont know if its cause the skunk2 shift **** sits higher on the lever. I really dont know what it is. hopefully find out before the transmission gets to beat up.
It's probably your synchros. I used to have a slight grind from 1st to 2nd before the lsd install, then afterwards, I couldn't even downshift at all from 3rd to 2nd. Had to drop the tranny again, re-inspect the gears, finally found out the synchro was slightly worn. I had about 95k miles on the tranny at the time. It doesn't take much wear for it to malfunction. After the gear changeout, everything worked fine. But first, check your slave cylinder. If there are any leaks there, you would have noticed it with dropping fluid levels.
When my clutch was installed, they used red line tranny fluid, which I know my Prelude disliked at first. Maybe my 2nd gear hates it when making shifts from 2nd to 3rd.

Before my lsd install, I had Honda mtf. After the lsd, I went with Red Line. Then I had the shifting problems. After I switched out 2nd gear, I stayed with Red Line and had no more problems. You're right, though, sometimes changing the transmission fluid can affect shifting performance.
Dude, I have the same problem. 1st to 2nd high RPM shift changes. And like you I know I'm shifting as cleanly as possible but it still happens. I have decided to face the fact that it is the synchro and it just sucks. Options are get it repaired for $$$, or live with it, cause I can shift fine up to around 6500 RPMs 1-2. I think I'm gonna live with it, but if you ever race me you will think I'm a shitty drier cause it grinds. Oh well.
The actual synchro itself doesnt cost much. The labor for removing the tranny is what you pay for. Dont really know how much they charge since I did my tranny work myself. But this isnt something you can do yourself w/out any car experience.
