Correct, no hot coolant will flow threw it so it will not get hot. But for some reason your thermostat is sticking open, it might take you car long to warm up and your bottom hose might not get hot and you will not have good heat in the car.

Did you install it right ? Does your engine stay on the cooler side ? Trying to determine if its sticking open.

Any word on this problem yet?? I have a 97 Prelude and I've put a brand new Honda thermostat in twice now and still....I can drive for an hour straight, pop he hood, feel the lower hose and it is still ice cold. I don't understand this at all. My temp needle is just a little past the midway point. But that is with my heat blasting at all times. If I turn off my heater, the needle goes higher.

Make sure you dont have any air in your cooling system. Open that bleeder bolt snd try to add more coolant.

I've bled the cooling system a number of times by the bleeder screw. When I open it, nothing happens. I have to rev the engine and then coolant will come out. By the way, my heat is very hot inside my car.
Oh yeah. Another thing.....my friend asked me to change his thermostat in his 97 civic HX because his heat was no getting very hot. After I changed it and filled the coolant back up he drove it for a while and just cause I was curious I felt his lower hose and it was still ice cold! Just like my Prelude. But his heat is very hot now and his temp needle is not overheating. What is going on? We don't understand this. I heard a rumor that you have to "prime" the honda water pumps after you change the fluid??? Is this true? This is really making me mad at Hondas. It's making me love my Ford Probe way more than I already do.
