Default A/F Guage or Apexi VAFC2 (for n/a)

Basically i have a chipped ecu from ebay (auction said it was done by http://www.ecutuning.com/) and i need to know more about whats going on with the air fuel mixture now.

that piece looks nice, ive seen other apexi's in my friends dsms, but do i really need something like that? is that overkill for my situation?

My worry is if i just install a guage, then ill see im running too lean at certain points, or perhaps really rich all the time... and be powerless to do anything about it. does that make any sense?

I mean, how does generic "chipping" work anyway? Without the car in front of them do they just guess at it? Or worse, just go over the top to make SURE you notice a difference once you reinstall it, not really caring about the potential risk to your engine?

Im not hip to this sort of thing, someone school me.

I believe you have hit the theoretic nail on the head my friend. Most of them find a generic base map from different sites and use that to 'add hp'. Now to answer your question about going overboard, I think when it comes to knowing your engines health, you cannot be too careful. Especially running a genericly chipped ECU which can be VERY dangerous. You could be leaning out everytime you rev that motor out. - Darrell

That is exactly what I don't want. I mean a little bit, ok. But how far is it going?

My real question is can you use that Apexi instead of running pillar guages?

Example: If I install an aftermarket exhaust temp sensor and run the wire to the apexi, can it read it correctly?

The vafc does not have an exhaust gas temp reading.

A vafc is not gonna tell you how rich your running, thats where a wideband comes into play, those a/f gauges are just for show. A wideband is gonna run you around 3 to 400 hundred dollars depending on how far you want to go. And a vafc will help you tune your air/fuel ratio.

I have the OBD0-OBD1 conversion, running a chipped P30 with datalogging, and real time programming.
I just got my apexi today to do minor changes. (running the laptop on a daily base is a pain)
And my wideband zeitronix unit should be here any day.

Fuel management is EVERYTHING. I already blew one engine... not letting that happen again.

this is what you should do,

Get a wideband o2 sensor, either the plx or the innovative lm1

The cons to the innovative is that its portable to some extent so you cant take the controller with you (in case of theft) or its simple to put in a buddies car for tuning as well.

The vafc isnt going to tell you if your running lean or not, its only going to allow you to make adjustments,

If you get the wideband you can tell what exactly your motor is doing, and if you buy a chip burner then you can use turbo edit to tune your car now that you have a wideband.

a innovative or plx wideband unit is like 300 bucks,

So you buy the wideband, and you can see whats going on.

The apexi can help tweak it to fix it.

I get it.

I still have a question though:

Can I get the PR3 ecu chipped to accept the single wideband and still run well?

And then could I use a jdm 4to1 header with the location down low at the collector, or do these have to heat up close to the block like the ones I have now?

Thanks again!

Installing that apexi VAFC-II is a PITA.

I need a ******* garage!
I need a ******* bigger light!
I need a ******* decent soldering iron!
I need a ******* break in the weather! IT'S RAINING!!!!

I also noticed a few differences in the PM7 and the PW0 wiring colors.
I scavenged parts of the SiR donor car wiring loom so I could copy/paste the wiring setup. Turns out that the wires have different colors. Ha. That's not in the manual!
Fortunately the wiring positions are the same.

get a mugen chip for you ecu, the mugen program only needs one 02 sensor, i would then put 2 bungs at the collector, one for your factory 02, and one for the wideband, i wouldnt hook the wideband up to the ecu, its more wiring to hack up, and its really not necesarry.
